@ sunn wolf: Thank you for that thoughtful response.  i will check out the Coetzee you mentioned as soon as i can.

i want to say there's a difference between inconsistency and development.  Change is necessary to keep things interesting over a sustained period of time, but i'm not convinced that this needs to involve internal contradiction.

i think one thing that interests me is the interplay of the literal and the non-literal in a narrative, and the relationship between what the characters and the reader are experiencing and the implied wider universe.  To deny that A=A is to make a departure from realism and throw that universe into question.  Obviously there's no reason you can't do that, i guess what i was trying to do here is put forward a defence of *not* doing that.  i think when we go about our lives we rarely encounter internal contradictions of the type that would be considered a "major continuity error" or "plot hole" in a work of fiction, and if we did this would be a strange occurrence, a mystery which we'd want to solve.  If we take this as a basic assumption about the world we live in, though, that doesn't diminish the capacity of that world to make us feel things, to take us on emotional journeys or to derive meaning from our experiences.  i feel like a good realist story should operate in the same way.

i take your first point and that is possible, but over the kinda time scales you're dealing with in comics, it's inevitable that internal contradictions will happen.

the rest of that is all interesting and it's fair enough for you to defend a 'good realist' story, which is after all still very possible in tyool 2015. one of the reasons i referred you to Coetzee is because that whole book is outwardly 'realist' but things get interesting when you consider that most chapters in Elizabeth Costello were actually given as lectures by coetzee himself, and that there are a lot of parallels between the Costello character and the real-life Coetzee. and then in the last chapter... well, i won't spoil it for you. i like it tho. Coetzee is very hit and miss but that ones a hit for me (nb please.pls pls dont bother with Disgrace that book is so bad)

I've tried to be clear that I'm mainly critical of people who turn marathoning a TV series or watching every movie in a long running series into a bizarre joyless automatic exercise. I just find this attitude of not enjoying something, but feeling the need to "keep up" out of a desire to stay relevant or being invested in a fictional world creepy and annoying.

I've probably crossed a line a few times, but if you want to watch a bunch of Dr. Who or Agent Carter, I don't think you're a wrong or bad person.

I see it's become Dawkins vs. Twitter Marxists.

I really hope that both lose.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Today, Twitter Marxists taught me that not being a fan of Stalin and also being a socialist is a ridiculous unsustainable idealism.

Please don't cancel the live stream, Odra. Looking forward to it got me through this very long day. (I spent an hour stirring milk for the purpose of yogurt-making).

I don't understand the media debates, so they were never emotional to me. Just a bunch of words I didn't understand.

On a related note, when did Twitter Marxists start hating The Wire and David Simon so much, anyway?

Tom Monaghan, who sold majority control of Domino's to Bain Capital in 1998 and would eventually bow out entirely; Bain would IPO Domino's in 2004

How much did he get for it? I hope he got a good deal, considering how successful Dominos' has become.

Also, what does it mean to, "IPO" something?
