I still don't quite understand why anyone who believes the majority isn't always right would support democracy as a form of government.
  • You don't need to be always right

I still don't quite understand why anyone who believes the majority isn't always right would support democracy as a form of government.

It opens the door for less abuses of power than any other government.

    i guess i'd support a meritocracy ideally

but i'd still want it to have democratic support
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
by meritocracy i mean people should be appointed to specific cabinet roles on the basis of relevant qualifications or working experience

not whatever basis they're appointed on in the UK at present, idk, favouritism?  kind of feels like Cameron purposefully picked the people *least* qualified to do their jobs properly for each cabinet position

I don't know how Ted Rall has a career.

I mean even aside from stupid opinions, his art is bad and bland, and his writing is boring and overly wordy.

Even as a kid reading Mad Magazine, I just skipped over his stuff.

r/badphilosophy made a thread making fun of nostalgebraist

and they made a bunch of LW references that don't seem applicable

the world is unfair sometimes i suppose

    Yeah...

    who would do that...

    it's weird

most people i actually talk to seem really smart

but collectively they keep electing horrible people

    how does democracy work
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    . . . Myrdradek!

    *gasp*

Look, that blogpost was bad, and it's not like I called in a hit on him
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i will say i'm sceptical on the bad writing thing

i mean i did lit, and my professors were mostly super into theory stuff, which is surely the number one culprit for producing pomo gibberish of the very worst kind

but it was made very clear before we began that writing like Derrida for an assignment was not recommended

    that's fair

i found that post kinda interesting, because at the time i was kind of wondering why someone with apparent talent and intelligence would be so attached to the LW community

not everyone who dislikes academia is a hack

    look at Tom Stoppard
  • My dreams exceed my real life
I get tired of being randomly shit on in places where I don't expect it, okay
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    i'm sorry

    i wasn't having a go

that "gasp" was meant as a joke, and my original post (before i noticed it was your thread) was mainly in response to the 'acausal robot god' post
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Speaking of, I get the same feeling from reading bits of Left Behind. HPMOR, or Atlas Shrugged.

It's always a facade of flat cardboard that the author is using to say boring bore things about their personal beliefs.

Have those libertarians trolling the Hugo Awards brought up the fact that H.G. Wells was a socialist who used his fiction to criticize colonialism(War Of The Worlds) and the developing class system(The Time Machine) and thus, SF was contaminated by icky icky politics from the beginning?

i don't understand this affinity between nerd institutions and reactionary politics at all

    I don't know either.

Mind you, there are plenty of nerds who swing left.

Let's Talk About Star Vs. The Forces Of Evil

    Isn't Star Butterfly Great

    (NSFAnonus)
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
why must Star fight the Forces of Evil?
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
they keep trying to nick her wand

why must Star fight the Forces of Evil?

Because she is the keeper of the extremely powerful Royal Magic Wand and she must keep it from falling into the wrong hands.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    i cannot dislike Star

    she does her best

actually the best episodes by far are definitely the ones that centre on her and she is allowed to go off and follow her own logic no matter whereever crazy place it takes her

I like when they reveal that Star's wand is powered by a tiny unicorn on a treadmill

this makes sense but doesn't account for the way it dominates certain communities, or the reactionary workplace culture found in many tech firms
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch

I like when they reveal that Star's wand is powered by a tiny unicorn on a treadmill

this is exactly why the show is great

    stuff like this
  • i think that has to do with how nerdery is focused around self-made-ness, independence and consumerism, which tend to be more conservative traits
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    ah, good point

I am not making fun of you I was just reminded of a song lyric.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    i know, sorry

idk why i'm complaining about "nerds" anyway, that's dumb

i do not have some special intrinsic connection to people who read sci-fi, play video games or collect stuff

they are not "my people", that's silly
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
if i were Anonus, or if i were Panurge and had prefixed my complaint with the word "math", i'd have been called out by now for generalizing
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Does Anonus complain about math nerds?
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
no, Anonus complains about nerds in general
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
although not so much these days
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
never got the appeal of self-madeness

    or consumerism
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
talking about people without at-mentioning them seems kind of rude, whoops

@Anonus did criticize xkcd the other day for being too pro-STEM and anti-liberal arts

and for telling math jokes that are not accessible to a general audience

which i guess are both "math nerd"y things
  • it seems weird to criticize someone for telling jokes you dont get

that's like going to a restaurant with spicy food then writing a 1-star review on yelp saying that it's spicy or something

like no shit you didnt like it it wasnt meant for you
