Superglobe: I've seen the defenders people are talking about, but it's unlikely many other people will since those threads are gone or the posts thumped. From what I remember, the most fervent defenders were fans of loli/shota anime like KnJ or BnP; there weren't any "yes, I'm in a relationship with a 10-year-old, try and stop me" types.
That said...I don't like loli or shota. I think the emphasis on cuteness above all else in anime of late is just plain disturbing -- and I like sugary-sweet things. The question is, how do you handle the topic without offending all the obsessed fans...

See, this bothers me. Why are you grouping lolicon and shota together with "anime of late" with an emphasis on "cuteness above all"? Is it not possible--indeed even likely--to like cute things in a nonsexual way?
This is what I mean when I say I've gotten lumped together with pedophiles because I watch Lucky*Star. (This also holds true for K-On, Azudaioh, etc. LS is just the most commonly brought up example.)

My concern isn't about their opinions per se, but rather the uninformed seeing their opinions and taking them as facts.
Well, I admit I've been out of the loop for a while; Azumanga Daioh was the last anime I really liked, and it's nearly ten years old. So what I know about the current state of things I've heard second-hand, and unfortunately it's been from people on TVT who are more than willing to think all anime is playing to someone's sick fantasies.
That and I remember how people on 4chan /b/ could be about pretty much any anime with cute females in it, even if it wasn't lolicon in the slightest. That's the sort of attitude I'd like to not see.
I'm tempted to say anyone who believes that without checking to see if it's true are idiots, but then again, I guess believing it is explicit or at least skeevy in nature would make them less likely to check due to fear of it being in their browsing history. Then again, just researching it wouldn't really get one in that much trouble, not to mention it wouldn't anyway considering it's completely innocent, but... I forgot where I was going with this. :/
Heh. Well, it's cute, and I know some people like cute in rather lurid ways, but really? I'm not seeing what the shippers see. Sure, it's intelligently written and produced, but just because it's actually good doesn't mean there's lesbian subtext around every corner.

tnu: There was a similar kerfuffle over the word "niggardly" here in DC a while back. It doesn't mean what it sounds like. Most people don't know that and thought it meant "niggerish".

This is like arguing over whether something is extortion or blackmail. There may be a valid technical difference, but it doesn't represent a significant change, only an attempt to deflect from the substance of the issue to its semantics. (And as an aside: when you are unwilling to make the effort yourself, you shouldn't criticize someone else, especially not in that tone.)
