    I was never able to ship Bert and Ernie because I always thought that they were brothers; and that's still what I think.

    People hate Justin Bieber either because they have an irrational dislike of pop music or because he's a douche.

    and to figure out how to explain people's behavior, without resorting to stereotyping and bad heuristics

    i'm not talking psychology as in skinner boxes and milgram experiments and making mice learn mazes.

    i guess i'm using the term rather broadly -- psychology being pretty much everything based in how we think.  this includes learning, communication, processing information, making decisions, etc.
  • i also hate the way this forum system does markup and pretends pasted linebreaks are meaningful

    if you want to know how we think, actual experimental psychology is precisely what you should be looking at

    i prefer to find a most basic term to describe something

    so, like

    people trying to get elected to offices is politics

    but so is doing dealmaking and compromises to get people to agree on a decision together, or trying to make yourself look better to someone who doesn't like you; that's also politics

    not usually called politics, but if you have to ask what it is, it's basically politics

    which is a branch of applied psychology

    there's lots of branches of applied psychology, including politics, economics, and communication

    they're usually dealt with separately from psychology, but they draw their deep-down bottom fundamental principles from psychology

    well we use it on a daily basis to produce mental models, which we can then feed more data into to expand, confirm, or challenge, and then revise

    we're just not calling it psychology, but rather "getting to know people" or something like that
