Tony Stark is apparently stepping down from the role of Iron Man at the end of Civil War II, ceding the role to a black female newcomer named Riri Williams, meaning that the Avengers is going to be entirely made of legacy characters that differ in race or gender from the originals. And Vision.
The internet has, of course, accepted this incoming change in a polite and good-natured fashion.

I wasn't paying attention and read this as RDJ stepping down to be replaced by a black woman and I was like "WHOA WHAT". But lol of course not, MCU would never.
my fondest hope is that she keeps the monicker intact
There's a villain called Lady Stilt-Man (named after the infamous Spider-Man villain, of course), and if the stars align in such a way that I end up writing for Marvel, she is going to show up in every single story that I write.
I am a little bit apprehensive about this move, to be honest? Especially since her sole character trait at this point is 'Better than the original character at what they do', and that's just Jane!Thor all over again.
But never let me be known as the sort of guy who'll shoot a new idea before it even gets in the door. It probably won't be worse than the glorified Minority Report currently known as Civil War II
The interview I looked at with Bendis implies that the character is not just a young black female tech genius, but also from a disadvantaged inner city background, which would be a bit stereotypical if I didn't get the sense that this is at least partly an intentional counterpoint to the "Objectivist hero" narrative that the original represented.

Ah, good point. If they go that route and make her a much more hands-on, mechanic at the auto parts store sort of character, I'll be impressed (though, by all accounts, they're going with a more polished look)
They had better account for the inherent difficulties of fitting in at a high-ranked university when you're younger than average, black and poor. If it turns out that they're not going to address that part of her life and they just put her at MIT because it sounded cool, I swear to God, I will end them.
She'd better be in touch with the 8% of MIT's black community, or at least acknowledge her connection or lack of it to the black community.
She'd better have conversations with the other poor kids about wrestling with the financial office for funds and listening to the rich kids talking about their vacations to Europe
There had better be some bloody conversations with her and Marvel's current teen trio (Ultimate Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel and Nova) about how it feels when you're mentally ahead of everyone else you're age and how that makes it difficult to relate to other teens because she lacks the typical experiences that a person her age would have.
A high-ranking university is a very specific environment to put a character in, with a lot of potential because of the uniqueness of it, and that goes doubly so if you're neither White or Asian. It is a veritable fertile ground in which to write storylines about what it's like to function in a field that has very little space for you, much less dominate in it.
If they do not appreciate the unique nature of the character they've built and turn her into nothing more than another stick to hit supervillains with, another stick to stir the diversity pot, I say onto you again, I will end them.

I like how the preface to Through the Looking-Glass includes Carroll complaining about having to sell The Nursery "Alice" for a shilling instead of four shillings.

There's so much stuff in The Annotated Alice that I didn't actually ever need to know
Like the fact that the Alice statue in Central Park has "borogoves" misspelled as "borogroves"
The depressed nerdy dudes who found purpose in sending shitty people to jail and making squares squirm have by and large either grown out of that scene, been conned into directing their ire at women and/or minorities, or taken that other road to zealotry and become Tumblr Marxists.
On that note, I wonder how much of the "sociopathic" portion of the Dark Triad as it applies to trolling can be chalked up to untreated chronic depression and anger issues rather than actual antisocial personality. Because feeling down on oneself all the time can make someone feel *mean,* let me tell you, and if nobody is a positive guiding force in such a person's life...
I feel OK right now but when I'm very tired it becomes abundantly clear how lucky I am to be surrounded by nice people with a sense of empathy rather than dangerous enablers because I would really be a self-destructive mess given the right tools.
P.S. That reviewer Crystal mentioned who did a whole series on the things wrong with The Asterisk War? I watched it. The whole thing. It's more about A-1 Pictures and bad light novel adaptations in general, but with that show as an unusually extreme exemplar; it was pretty good, and as I suspected, thematic rather than (*yawn*) an episodic riff. I also really like how he put forward Chivalry of a Failed Knight as a show that did the same thing without the incomprehensible characterisation, garbled setting, egregious misogyny and so forth, and was actually pleasant. It looks pleasant.
Bluh. Talking about YouTube videos outside the video thread. I really *am* running on fumes. Have a good day, everybody.

Go rest your hand for a while. Maybe read or something, watch TV, something requiring minimal fine motor intervention.
