I still expected to see Grandpa Carl when I walked home from school last week (my immediate family lives at the bottom of a lane, at the middle is my cousins, at the top is my grandparents).

And if this person is mad about critics not being aloof aribiters of good taste anymore, I have to wonder whose reviews they were reading. It almost sounds like they just want works to be described in the hushed tones of a golf announcer, not commented on.
That or faff on and on about the technical aspects and how well put together individual shots are, while giving lip service at best to the narrative, much like what happens in video game reviewing.
When I clicked on this I just saw "this cat" with the shoe and wondered what sort of absurd, self-referential humor you were playing at or whatever, before realizing there is more to the post.
I don't think I entirely agree with that article on Channel Awesome, particularly when it comes to Kyle's work. Even in his early, jokier material, he engaged far more with his subject matter and its historical and cultural context than the vast majority of his riff-oriented contemporaries, and his recent work *definitely* does—although there are more people who make that sort of stuff now, so it's not quite so rare.
It just comes off as weirdly mean-spirited and a bit pretentious, despite not being wrong in many of its points.

One could see this format as an expansion of the definition of criticism. Long gone are the days of two men in sport coasts sitting on a balcony set and arguing. Now, the review is the content. When not fueled by faux rage, reviewers use their platform for bouts of sudden autobiographical sincerity.
I feel like, of all the points, this is the one that stuck with me the most. And that just makes me sad about it coming from a mean-spirited article which acts so above it all. I mean, there are good points in it, I'd just rather see them elsewhere.

definitely
man that kind of tone stuff is important though
I for one found a community of people interested in criticism through TGWTG (well, go far enough back and I really just got it through the AVGN). Even though the Nostalgia Critic hasn't aged well (but I'll fight anyone who says the AVGN hasn't) his work resonated with me regardless and I fucking hate seeing that smugly dismissed.

Hey same, except just AVGN and skipping over TGWTG and went about it differently.

And a cute girl.
I should really venture out more and try and meet new people, but...

Goshdangit, 2014, you were a bad bad year.

It’s like if someone criticized webcomics and made, say, Gunnerkrigg Court the centre of their argument.
It’s a bit silly and kinda petty.
