I still don't get how a series of pulpy fantasy novels became critically-praised TV.
I swear HBO could put a jar of mayonnaise on screen for 30 minutes, and critics would praise it.
what's so pulpy about them?
From what I've heard about the franchise, it feels like a thinly-veiled version of the lurid fantasy novels that have been consistently published for nearly a century now. I think you know the roots that those novels had in the pulp fiction of the 1930s.
i read the first game of thrones book and it was a bookwhere all the food was meticulously described to the point of being annoying and characters kept laughing because, i dunno, a dwarf started standing on a table, or because someone said smething incredibly not witty and eventually i was just like 'fuck this shit' and didnt finish it even though i had, like, 10 pages to go
* it's more black metal than their previous albums
* despite losing Arthur von Nagel (*who did a lot of their songwriting and was also the vocalist/bassist) they still sound rad as fuck (many, me included, were worried that they'd be kinda lost without him)
also the cover art is MORE DOPER THAN EVER BEFORE
LIKE HOLY SHIT
IM BUYING THIS AS SOON AS I GET BACK FROM DONATING PLASMA
@aliroz: i've always heard the voting with their feet thing as plague specific... except i just remember reading the same sentiments in the context of burma so nvm lol.
game of thrones seems like entertainment. nothing wrong with that. saying it's realistic politics, or the rape thing, well,
i've always found medieval class relationships to be rather interesting
ALSO medieval is a really hard word for me to spell for some reason
regarding game of thrones: it always struck me as "yet another HBO show", albiet an annoyingly ubiquitous one based around a less than stellar book series (rather similar to Dexter in that regard now that i think of it)
but that rape thing has DEFINITELY put me off of the show in a big way

Okay, yeah, but the fanbase seems to say, "this is what the REAL middle ages were like", and that bugs me.
I always got the impression that A Song of Ice and Fire (and by extension Game of Thrones) escaped the "pulpy" label by virtue of being just grim and depressing enough to convince the cynics that it was "deep" or "realistic". (While stopping shy of the Warhammer 40000 levels of grimness that are pretty much universally regarded as good comedy.)
Basically, imagine if Christopher Nolan had gone for a hard R rating in his Batman movies, rather than PG-13.
I don't get the massive hatedom pulpy D&D-inspired fantasy seems to have.
The genre has its problems but there's no reason you can't fix those without making your series incredibly depressing.
i don't hate it per se, it just seems to be intensely oversaturated as a genre and loans itself to mediocre, bloated writing for some reason or another
you just get these incredibly stiff, lifeless battle sequences (tolkien's fault) and purple scenery porn all over the place and it's just blllaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
I would direct you towards Cardcaptor Sakura instead, personally.
Depends on what you liked about Sailor Moon.
Personally, I prefer Pretty Cure. That's not to say CCS is a bad thing, though.
I am not very familiar with CCS, but from what I've heard it uses the traditional magical girl formula where girl gets magical powers, cute mascot familiar creature, and goes and does stuff and probably has to balance school/family/social life and magical girl life and such. Probably gets a love interest.
The Pretty Cure metaseries is probably best known for adding a lot more action to the magical girl formula. Also, I think there's less emphasis on romance, comparatively, and more frequently features other aspects of character development.
Ironically, Sailor Moon is not as close to the traditional magical girl formula as CCS is, as far as I know. Sailor Moon takes some influences from the hero team genre.
My mom just got really pissed at me because after angrily telling me to clean up some power cords that had repeatedly been a problem in the past I suggested that we move the power strip that has like 90% of the stuff in the living room to somewhere where it wouldn't be an obstruction.
That's pretty a pretty asinine thing to get mad about even for her.
More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.
