Considering how the Common Cold works in such a way as to be very quickly adapting and changing itself, any effective cure would only be effective for a few weeks. Also, considering how "The Common Cold" is more a list of symptoms than a specific disease, that makes it even harder (lots of different pathogens make those symptoms and are called the Common Cold). Considering how it's many different viruses and that those viruses are very quickly changing, I don't think it's going to happen with one single magic medicine. Antibiotics do nothing against viruses, and using an antibiotic against a virus just has the side effect of making certain bacteria pathogens more resistant to antibiotics.
I think it is, in a way, a niche for germs, a very successful niche. Even should we eliminate all pathogens with those symptoms, why wouldn't other pathogens just rush to take up that niche?
But, on the other and, coffee contains Caffeine. Trying to find a decent coffee would be like trying to find a base that is acidic. It doesn't work that way.
