What I'm saying is that people want to be famous, and hard sciences aren't usually jobs that can make a person famous.

I don't understand how the "everyone wants to be a celebrity" myth persists to this day.

The only people who have a specific desire to be famous are emotionally stunted manchildren who were neglected throughout their childhood. Fame is a fucking horrifying thing and if you want to be famous I pretty much never want to know you.

Perhaps famous was the wrong word. Everyone wants to feel important, and since no one really knows about famous mathematicians or scientists, but everyone knows about authors.

Are you kidding me? Are you really going to say that Einstein and Tolkien are not on, roughly speaking, the same level of known-ness?

How many other scientists can you think of? Moreover, how many people know what Einstein did?

And again, doing something to feel important is a sign of some issues.

I don't agree with the idea that everyone wants to be famous, but to be fair, it's entirely possible to be an important scientist and receive very little acknowledgement, whereas the most successful authors are also the most famous ones.

Louis Pasteur, Charles Darwin, Carl Sagan, Robert Oppenheimer, Gregor Mendel, Turing (whose first name I don't know), Marie Curie, off the top of my head. [edit: And reddit's favorite scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson]

And Einstein came up with the Theory of Relativity, which is sort of what the entirety of the modern understanding of physics is based upon.

The only authors I can think of that are household names are mostly household names because their books are very old/required reading in school, or they're famous for being really bad, like Stephanie Meyer.

No one really knows who Douglas Adams is on the same level that they know who Steph Meyer is. The only contemporary authors I can think of who are renowned for their success are Stephen King and J.K. Rowling.

    Alan Turing.

Most people know that Einstein did something important, but I'm not sure how many people understand precisely what he discovered or why it was so significant.

Meyer is famous because her books were popular with their intended demographic, not specifically because they suck.  There are plenty of bad books; Twilight is not uniquely awful.

Also Douglas Adams is pretty famous, at least among people with any interest at all in science fiction.
  • Twilight had the distinction of being both awful and widely read.

And even if we go with that not being the reason, that's still only three authors I can think of who are household names. I'm not even sure if I'd count Stephen King there.

  • okay my hands are shaking.

Time to find something else to do.

Yes, but does the average person know of all these scientists, let alone what they've done?

    I guess you're upset?

I don't want to upset anyone, I just don't understand why you would be upset.  You're not under attack here.

I feel like I'm under attack here.

Because I cannot make myself understood well enough to prevent a stupid-ass argument like this one, apparently.

I should just keep my fucking mouth shut.

  • Not a hybrid rabbit-skink spirit
This argument is pretty silly, anyway, because it's pretty much impossible to gauge how hard it is to get a degree.

I mean, people are incredibly different. I know plenty of folks who can't program to save their life, but it comes pretty easy to me, and I enjoy it too. And it would be hell for me to go for a liberal arts degree.

That's not even getting into the multitude of colleges you could apply for and the relative difficulty of their respective programs...
  • edited 2012-12-23 17:31:26

    ^ ^ I know that feel.
  • Oh Jesus, you guys. This is a stupid argument for many reasons. Being
known and appreciated for what you do is something that depends on what
you've done but also the kinds of people who will appreciate what you
do. I probably know more authors off the top of my head than I do
scientists (but, I still know quite a few). My chemist friend could
probably name off way more scientists than me but not recognize many of
the authors I appreciate. The average person who has no strong interest
or knowledge in either would probably know only a few names.

    On
the topic of degrees: people go into what they are going to do. Degree
elitism is so fucking laughable. Just because you get an arty degree
does not doom you, but chances are your job options will be smaller.
Fuck, I'm getting an English degree, I know the fucking risks. I want to
be a writer, but will probably compromise with some other job. And it doesn't mean I'm doing it because it's a slack off degree or anything.

On that one kickstarter post: Despite my opinion on Feminist Frequency (it's terrible she received those threats. But, I don't like her videos in general. She raises some points, but she is general in a bad way. She tries speaking for all women and ends up coming off as patronizing towards the people she's supposedly speaking for) I agree with the second poster, because the first was just dragging two unrelated projects together to "prove" a dumb point. Fuck, I'm sure there are plenty of other, even more pointless kickstarters you could have done that with.

This post was long and totally not late to the party.
  • Oh, jeez, the thread is a mess again.

Alright, here's what I'm going to say. The Banks case probably should have gotten more support. The Anita S. case shouldn't have gotten her burned in effigy by a third of the internet. The macro creator and the commenter are both wrong for letting their rage about one case color their perception of the other.

I don't really have a handle on post-bachelor study, but getting a Master's degree in anything earns one some respect. A Master's in a quantitative field is going to evoke more respect, given the general paucity of mathematically-inclined intellectuals (which, in turn, is the result of a dislike of math being fairly common in culture), but that doesn't mean that someone with a Master's degree in literature spent their postgrad playing Farmville. No matter what, a degree from a respectable college requires work and deserves a deal of respect.

Aaand, from what I can tell, very few people in the higher ranks of their field care about widespread fame. If you have a doctorate in Chinese literature or musicology, you care more about your work and the views of your fellow intellectuals rather than acclaim from the peanut gallery.

  • On the degree thing: Jesus christ, you guys, I'm a theatre major, and I already understand that I won't be making a buttload of money as an actor. I can sorta float on my own money, however, since I come from a fairly wealthy family. I also hope to learn other skills that will help me secure a job. Worse comes to worse, I can make an idiot out of myself for YouTube monies, at the very least.

On the Kickstarter thing: I wanted to reblog Lazuli's post and add this:

Consider what is being compared: a white woman who is a very divisive critic (to say the least-her Bayonetta video seems to be evidence of her being off-base) and has been largely MIA since her Kickstarter was funded. On the other side, we have a young Black man accused of rape-something that gives off some undercurrent of racism to me, the factor of feminism be damned.

Take whatever side you wish, but I think I'll side with the black guy.

  • Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
I don't normally follow what Tumblr tells me I'll like. I just look for people I know and follow them.

On a somewhat related note, I didn't fill out any particular interests when I first joined, so they often just recommend me blogs that the people I follow like.
  • yeah the username is dumb and almost funny and the page is totally blank, of course it is me.
  • if you guys hadn't said it, i'd never know tumblr recommends blogs

also, i recently found out there's a "posts you liked" thingy
because i recently liked a post for the first time

The recommendation is called Tumblr Radar. I think I found typeverything through there.

Though I was thinking of TumblrBot for recommendations, I think, derp.

Apparently when you tag something with an Anime name, Hentai blogs start following you.

    Dear God.

Now I'm thinking of what a Kemonozume doujinshi would look like.

    Augh...

    The sadness will last forever.
I've got a hentai blog following me....but my main blog doesn't have porn...unless you count text as porn.

    Weird.
  • I mostly get random Homestuck 8logs following me, which makes sense since I play Vriska.

My side8log has a couple cat 8logs following it, which also makes sense.
  • There's one NSFW blog following me, but I think it's because it specializes in Touhou and I posted a remix of a Touhou song once.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
If only there were a blog dedicated solely to cute pictures of martens, fishers, polecats, ferret-badgers and other under-appreciated mustelids. I would be in a perpetual cuteness fugue.

I wonder if I'm good at tagging my stuff.

I don't have many followers, but a great deal of my stuff gets random reblogs and likes from complete strangers.

    TRIGGER WARNING: ABUSE, MURDER, TORTURE

Who the fuck would post this? And why is it called “porn”? It is the grossest most vile thing Ive ever seen. I want to vomit. Tears are going down my face. The juice piling up beneath it. The body of the chicken exposed, the rest burned and deep fried. Its so gross and vile and there is no compassion for us vegans on this site or those of us who dont like murder. It is murder. You kill a living thing and put it on a plate. Deep frying it doesnt mean it wasnt a living thing. Its so fucking sick HOW DARE YOU PUT THIS ON MY DASH!

-That’s not juice you dumb cunt, it’s syrup for the waffles under the chicken.

--So putting waffles and syrup under the chicken makes the fucking murder ok? I HOPE SOMEONE KILLS YOU AND PUTS YOU ON A PLATE WITH WAFFLES AND CHICKEN.

---Pe9ple can 6e triggered 6y just a69ut anything. Take this example; it seems that this 9ne is triggered 6y waffles and chicken as it is called 9n Earth. And I d9 h9pe that the 9ne wh9 is threatening that pers9n will cease their h9rrid w9rds. It is quite rude, n9t t9 menti9n very uncivilized. If y9u take a l99k at the s9urce f9r this picture, it is rec9gnized as p9rn9graphy. I understand that f99d can 6e sexualized, 6ut in d9ing s9, 9ne sh9uld add this t9 the list 9f triggers. Please, every9ne, kn9w that it is imp9rtant t9 tag them and make it kn9wn s9 that th9se wh9 are very unc9mf9rta6le with these su6jects can av9id it.

THANK YOU! This is a trigger for me. The murder of animals is a trigger for me. So its only corteous to put triggers on pictures of meat. But people think its funny to pick on me and send me pictures of meat and its very damaging to me.

That is the duty of the Waste class. The Waste class is the remains of an elaborate session where after winning the game, is the sole player allowed to recall the games events. That’s why there is only ever one. The Waste class can also be seen as the Scribe class, it’s their duty to tell the story of the game, and bring for the memories of a session won. The reason for this is because there will always be a chance of us having to return to the Medium. Whether or not we are aware of it, some of us have reached God Tier, some of us have done incredibly things, some of us have died, only to be revived with a kiss from another player. The game may yet surface again one day, and that is why Hussie is using his Waste of Space powers on us. He’s trying to remind us of what we can do, so when we do have to play this game again, we won’t be down at the bottom again. We can remember. And we can win again.
