As a kid I always preferred the Gobots. Whenever the neighborhood kids would laugh about my decision I'd simply point out that mine weren't missing any hands/landing gear/weapons/accessories, and that they more closely resembled the vehicles they transformed to
We lived in an area where there wasn't much TV so we never saw the shows growing up, so I didn't miss anything there

Squids have beaks, and some bird beaks sort of have tongues. But if squids had tongues, I highly doubt they would be suited for licking.

A decent point...though I doubt anything in the world could convince me they weren't the poor man's Transformers.
Even back then, Transfromers had a movie and got actual popular actors to do voices in it.
