Just skip every strip written between 2007 and 2012 and read a summary of what happened. Seriously, that whole arc of strips has less actual content than certain individual strips that came out in 2006.

Also, I wouldn't skip anything if reading Girl Genius for the first time, if only because you have the benefit of not waiting for the next pointless page. You can just read on and push through until the story picks up.

It seldom comes up because the plot stopped dead back in 2007. With Homestuck, you can have one update where loads happens and everything is changed, so the fans get all pumped and add it to as many trope pages as possible.
On the trope pages that were made before 2007, it's still ubiquitous. We've cataloged pretty much all the examples from it and there aren't all that many more left. It's still an obsession; but there's nothing much to write on the Tv Tropes pages that hasn't been already written. Just because the mine has been exhausted, doesn't mean that nobody is still digging in it.
We don't bring it up because there's nothing to bring up; and that "oh, hey, they're still in the castle" conversation gets old after a while.
