Now, most of the link in question is just flaming and “he’s full of shit,” and I don’t care about that, because either you enjoy reading John Solomon and company’s rants or you don’t. It’s a taste. Presumably the people who don’t like reading John Solomon likewise have an intense dislike for the works of Joe Queenan or Ambrose Bierce or Lester Bangs, and this is, I believe, their loss.
(It’s certainly stupid, of course, to suggest, as some have, that John Solomon is a “bad writer.” I recognize the need to claim bullshit as gospel truth out of a sense of spite, but come on – either you recognize simple writerly skill at crafting inflammatory rhetoric, or you don’t. As Penny Arcade once said, paraphrased – which is it, are you stupid or a liar?)
But one thing about it caught my eye – not least because the author took double-plus care to make sure it would catch any reader’s eye by bolding and italicizing it, so I don’t think it’s presumptuous to think this the main idea he wants to communicate with his essay:

counter-strike, planetside 2, deus ex, dishonored, far cry, saints row, gta, just cause, uncharted (not a steam game, but mentioned every time comparisons with/between consoles come up), gears of war, bioshock, fallout crysis, doom, wolfenstein, watch_dogs, skyrim (never are other elder scrolls games mentioned), dark souls, h1z1, day z, killing floor, call of duty, battlefield, insurgency, and maybe some batman games, witcher, rocket league, tomb raider, ark, rust, 7 days to die, payday, battleblock theater, and south park the stick of truth. and now overwatch.
and occasionally civilization, mount & blade, europa universalis, stardew valley, undertale, terraria, starbound, minecraft, gmod, l4d/l4d2, tf2, talos principle, life is strange, mgs, stanley parable, age of empires, dota 2, league of legends, xcom, don't starve, final fantasy, and a handful of others.
with the possible exceptions of skyrim and dark souls, and maaaaaybe wolfenstein, every game/series in that first list is something i am not interested in.
2. no one ever talks about visual novels EXCEPT to bash them for being porn.
3. rare are mentions of even the most acclaimed 2D games, like aquaria, freedom planet, or guacamelee.
I admit though I don't see what "hardcore" values have to do with anything on that list, short of many having a high skill ceiling and working well with more competitive styles, but it's not like none of them can be played casually (i.e. not high dedication to skill mastery).

i'm just about the only one who ever mentions these sorts of games, and most people who make threads asking for recs aren't looking for games like this
