You know what confused the hell out of me as a little kid?
"English"
Because it means someone who's from England and I'm not from England, so I'm not English, but it's also something you speak and I do speak English, so I speak English but I'm not English
4-year-old Avenue had a hard time working that out

Seat belt laws make me feel weird.
Yes, there are a lot of people who wouldn't wear the seat belts if not for the threat of a fine. Yes, this has most likely prevented hundreds of deaths over the years.
But at the same time...if something I do endangers only myself, why does the government have the right to forbid me from doing it?

Consider that the fines also make sure that parents put seat-belts on their children as well as themselves when driving.
A life is important to more than the one that possesses it.

My brother thinks all drugs should be legal, since apparently that will make less people be addicted to them.
Like... I can get the argument for the legalization of marijuana but there's really no way to casually use crack. Legalizing it would be really, really dumb.

I would argue that decriminalising the use of dangerous drugs while tightly restricting their distribution and having a more open attitude toward the treatment of addiction would do wonders for this country. But we like to punish those that we ought to heal.

I agree that sending someone to prison over an addiction is a very inefficient way of dealing with such matters but, well, there's a reason a lot of these things are illegal.
My brother was arguing for no restrictions, as if drug use existed in a vacuum and only affected the people who use them.
