When I was 14 I was essentially still a child

I didn't really hit teenagerdom till I was like 20
  • When I was 14, I was able to go to town with my friends and be back in the early evening, no problem.

You're #3, so if I just shut my mouth keyboard once in a while maybe you'd get #2 again. :P

When I was 14, I was suffering though several different obsessions (yay for no SSRIs in 1991 :P) and I really, really wanted a Mac even though we had zero chance of affording anything more expensive than a calculator at the time.

I would be 4th, except apparently Omni took it upon itself to split me into 3 separate entities.

I don't get why some people seem to think that 3 to 7 Mbps download and upload speed are slow.

Installing Mathematica through the University's download program and
The license is no charge but must be renewed September 25th of each year (regardless of when you initially begin licensing this product).
Why September 25th, of all dates? That means you'd have to renew it about a month into the semester. Why not choose, like, August 25th?

Unless this is a holdover from when we used quarters instead of semesters...
  • So that people can start using it, get comfortable with it, then feel annoyed when they are unable to use it any longer in their corporate or government job and then go buy a license.
  • I seriously suspect that software is so much more expensive than games because games need to entice people to buy but software demand is far more inelastic.

The license date may be something set by Wolfram, not your school

I forget how much Mathematica costs retail (almost certainly too much in a world where Maxima, its direct ancestor, is open source), but yeah, specialist software always commands a higher price. I've heard that CAD packages for aerospace engineering can easily hit 6 digits a seat, bit then, part of that cost goes into making sure the plans generated by the software don't kill people or destroy a neighborhood.

$2745 for an individual (or $1095 a year! bargain!!)

as a lisp programmer i would like to say that maxima is fucked though

i don't think maxima and mathematica are related except for both being CASs

    True, hadn't considered that

Perhaps Wolfram is assuming schools operate on a quarter schedule

You have to be a current student to register, which would prevent the hypothetical scenario of someone graduating and continuing to try to use the free student license for their paying job

'Course, that assumes someone willing to resort to such tactics is above outright piracy anyway, which is not a given
  • What Centie replied with.

These sorts of things always involve a student licensing deal.  If you're not a student, you don't get to use it.

Disney couldn't have gotten H-B in the '70s; Taft wouldn't have sold it
  • My dreams exceed my real life
"My theory is that the excitement surrounding men's fashion has been in direct proportion to the popularity of Mad Men. Now that people are tired of Mad Men and, even worse, Mad Men is going with more 70s-like styles, the fire is gone."

    Hey

    hey

    hey naners
  • well, Mad Men did help propel the very beginnings of #menswear in getting men to be more interested in dressing well, but there hasn't really been a relationship between the two for a while

that said the Mad Men costuming department has always done a good job

also, 70s style tends to happen when you approach the 1970s mister daft internet person
  • My dreams exceed my real life
I don't think Mad Men would have gotten as far as it did if it didn't attract the failed patriarchs it satirized the pretentions of.
  • i don't really know anything about Mad Men beyond the clothes stuff

never watched it at all myself

  • My dreams exceed my real life
    The first season was okay.

I stopped watching, and then I found out they turned my favorite character into a one dimensional villain everyone hated so.
