LIMBO is free on Steam until June 22nd 10 AM PT.

aaaa of course when I'm not home.

    Oh well.
  • You could just add it to your account through the Steam site and download it when you get home.

    Okay, I finished Limbo.

I gotta say I'm a bit underwhelmed.  The aesthetic was great and some of the puzzles were clever, but it just felt too much like I was fighting the slippery-ass controls the entire way to be able to really enjoy it.

I mean for free it's a great waste of a few hours, but it didn't feel like it met the hype.
  • Munch munch, chomp chomp...
That's how I felt about it years ago too, but the aesthetic underwhelmed me too, however much it worked.
  • I saw that yesterday, laughed a bitter laugh

I mean it's less Nintendo and more whoever the fuck they hired for localization.

It's not even that.  It's two completely separate jokes that got spliced together to fan the flames for no goddamn reason.  It's not even stepping in the mudpie so much as people throwing poop.

FFS there have been like ten different Gate scandals around here in the last two years alone.

“As many have observed,” the company said in a statement, “when viewed in its entirety the Nintendo Treehouse: Live segment for Paper Mario: Color Splash from E3 includes two jokes separated by commentary and gameplay that have no relation to each other. One joke has to do with Watergate, while the other is a nod to the Fungi Fun Guys from Mario Party 8. It was brought to our attention today that these two jokes have been spliced together and misconstrued as a crude reference to an online hate campaign.”
  • My dreams exceed my real life
I wonder if Gamergate is going to throw a fit about being called a hate campaign, or temporarily suspend their fake moral outrage to paint the SJeWs as alarmist.
  • If anything, props to Nintendo calling Gamergate what it is.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
It's still better than way back in the first Super Mario Bros when this happened

  • Ooh, I saw people talking about that yesterday, but had absolutely zero context for it. All things considered I feel pretty good about that.

I agree with this, though. It's like everyone forgot that Gamergate wasn't the origin of using -gate for scandals.

Sometimes I wish Watergate hadn't ruined the name Watergate
  • fight. dream. horse. love.
I mean, the person who first posted was Zoe Quinn herself, who can be forgiven for being a little quick on the draw
  • Okay

    But

There is no way in HELL NoA wasn't aware of the -gate suffix's most recent and relevant usage

They should've at least had the tact to recognize that nows not the time to make a gate joke in close proximity to a joke involving five guys

It's neither.  That scandal is over two years old, since which I can name a rather large handful more gates that happened.  More than a few of which have rather more pressing national implications.

Like, as far as I know the "five guys" thing wasn't even a particularly well-known thing outside of Gamergate's own conspiracy circles.  It doesn't even show up in most articles describing the controversy.

I mean I can't really blame Quinn for being a hair trigger about it given what she went through, but...seriously.

Nintendo is not really known for being "in" with the self-styled 'hardcore' crowd which is mostly what GG is made up of.
  • FFS I didn't even remember "five guys" was part of that shitstorm until now.  I was perfectly happy continuing to associate it with the burger joint down the block where my friend works.

this is probably why this slipped under the radar; a loooooot of people don't seem to remember how Gamergate actually started

I mean, given that Mike Brown was murdered at around the same time I'm surprised I even remember it at all

    Intentional or not it's tactless

I mean, the localization team FIRED someone because of Gamergate. Or some subsidiary of it, idk. I'm sure that the people involved in the industry are aware of one of the biggest video game things to happen in a long time, come on

  • I just mean it's possible the "five guys" thing is not as well-known as one'd think even if Nintendo are familiar with Gamergate as an entity.

I'm not necessarily trying to defend them (they've done their fair share of questionable things in the past), but I'm just saying I could buy it being a genuine accident.
  • I can't. Localization is a lengthy process that goes through a lot of people.
  • The scenes in question happen like 10 minutes apart though.

Yeah i think looking at the lines in the context of the game, this probably wasn't an intentional reference.  A little unfortunate, sure, but idk if NoA pays enough attention to internet bs for this to be 'tactless'.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
I don't think this is Nintendo's fault so much as the fault of kooky internet people connecting the (rather remote) dots in unforeseen and unintended ways

Look I'm saying that they literally fired someone for being the target of a harassment campaign; this shit intimately affects people whose jobs ARE video games so I'd imagine it's the kind of thing that crosses their desk.

Kooky Internet people including the most prominent victim of the harassment campaign, so
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
    so whatever

So it's understandable she reacted the way she did, especially if she initially just saw the screenshots out of context.

Ultimately there's no way of knowing but i do think it's a fair point that we actually got a pretty clear condemnation of GG out of this, by Nintendo, in describing them as a hate campaign.

    This.
  • I'd like to see a more concerted effort from Nintendo to fix these kinds of issues rather than just vaguely condemning them

For example, active inclusion of minorities, better representation of women, not firing people for being victims of harassment campaigns
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
I like to see Nintendo make another good 2D Metroid game.

    No argument from me there.

Metroid Fusion was pretty good imo.

The Prime trilogy is worth checking out, if you like the 2D games.  They are not standard FPSes, they are very exploration-based.

    fight. dream. horse. love.
Alison Rapp, former employee of Nintendo who was fired after some GGers publicized a thesis she wrote and a second as an escort (I think? It's been a while)

Alison Rapp. It was a few months ago. (It must have been shortly before Miitomo launched because I remember a bunch of people saying they were going to boycott Miitomo because of it.)
  • It was related to perceived censorship of Fire Emblem, because the reasoning was nonsensical

I'd like to play Prime but have no suitable hardware to do this currently

    that's true

depends what you consider recent i guess
  • I actually really appreciate Earthbound's combat. Something about the simplicity and purity of it really appeals to me.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
    Are you playing Earthbound?
  • Yup, been making slow progress recently

Tell me when you get to Moonside

Also: Everyone kinda has to force themselves through the mines with the moles
  • I'm in Fourside right now

If this game is secretly about abortion I haven't seen signs of it just yet

Did reunite some sesame seeds though

    Earthbound is not about abortion.

You are almost at Moonside though
