I'm going to do an obligatory pimping of one of my most favorite games.

Tales of Maj'Eyal is one of my most favorite roguelikes ever.

Although really, calling it a roguelike is probably a misnomer. It's part roguelike and possibly part diablo? It has standard roguelike features such as brutal difficulty and the standard turn-based combat, but it also features combat based around skills and cooldowns, as opposed to the usual "bump-to-attack and use potions, scrolls, and spells as needed" style that is common to roguelikes. Not to mention the fact that the default difficulty setting gives you lives as you level up, I believe up to about 8 or so. Probably easier than the average roguelike, but still very fun.

Possibly my favorite part is the multitude of classes and the unlock system that goes along with them. What kind of character do you want to play? You can go with basically all the standards. Rogues, Alchemists, Archmages, Necromancers, Archers, Summoners, and so on. However, a ton of the classes are very unique. If you want to play a melee warrior who takes on the power of dragons to enhance his combat, the Wyrmic is the class for you. Or perhaps you want to use the sheer force of your hate for all living things to conquer your foes. In that case, the Cursed is more your style. Or if you want to play a mage that uses the forces of time itself to fight, including summoning your future self to aid you (with the side effect of getting pulled back in time to help your past self), then the Paradox Mage is for you.

And while it sounds complicated, the unlock system helps keep it simple. You start out with the most basic classes, the easiest ones to learn and play. Things like the Berserker and Bulwark, Rogue, Alchemist, Archer. (Though take note that easy does not mean boring or standard. It also includes the Arcane Blade and the Shadowblade) And obviously, playing the game gets you into the more unique classes. It's simple, but it's very effective.

All in all, it's just a really solid game. All of the classes play and feel very unique, it's more forgiving than the average roguelike (on the normal difficulty at least), the combat is far more engaging than most roguelikes (especially for melee characters), and all in all it just feels like a labor of love. And best of all, it's free, so you should all try it right now.

Also on Greenlight, so it might become a steam game soon!

I would play Roguelikes if they weren't so damn hard.

I also kind of resent the ASCII art graphics that most of them have. I feel it's a deliberate attempt at alienation.

TOME is probably one of the easiest to play.

    It also has graphics.
  • I wish my DS wasn't broken.

Kid Icarus: Uprising is a fun game.

TOME is probably one of the easiest to play.

I've heard that about many roguelikes and shmups (another genre I can never seem to really get into). Just because it's the easiest doesn't mean it's easy.

Sorry, I'm rambling. It does sound like fun, though.

    Yeah, it's still decently hard.

The other one that I would recommend is Dungeons of Dredmor. That one is actually fairly easy depending on the difficulty. And I'm not talking about relatively, either.

Roguelikes are my thing because I have a tendency to be very masochistic with my video games.

The harder a game is, the more satisfying it is once you finally beat that fucker.

Depends on the roguelike. Some of them generate fairly easy to navigate or useful layouts.

Bayonetta 2 has been confirmed as exclusive for Wii U. Sounds like wondrous news, right? Not to these people, it isn't. In fact, we're seeing the biggest fanboy meltdown ever witnessed.

Kikiyama is generally believed (based on a single e-mail) to be a woman now.

We still don't know anything else about her, though.

The game only mocks you for continuing in EoSD. Same with not being able to get to the final stage.

And continuing, at the least, will allow you to start preparing for the later levels before you have to face them.

If that's supposed to be an amusing response, I don't think I get it.

  • Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
    Episode 1: "Nicknaming is hard!"

"...Why are you trying to give a name to my butt again?"

I'm trying to get good at League of Legends, because there are a bunch of people I know IRL that play it.

Thanks to Humble Bundles and the Steam sale in the summer, I have more games than I can really play on my computer. Super Meat Boy is one that I really enjoy, though. And I finally got a controller so I can play some of these games more easily. I got Street Fighter 4 because I was interested in learning how to play fighters, but it's not going to be much fun unless I know at least one other person to play with.

I brought a PS2 with me to college this year, because my brothers don't use it anymore. For some reason it won't play any PS1 games, though.

Oh hey, looks like I just got DOTA 2. Wonder how fun it is.

I made another Dark Souls video. How do I fare? Let's find out.
