April is a time for celebration in many cultures, the beginning of spring. I don't see how the pagan Saxons and angles "literally invented" the tradition of celebrating at that time of year. Also, the Christians of the second century had a pascha that was distinct from the Jewish passover. So, it's not as though the Christians didn't have it until they took it from the pagans.

Also, the polish Sweiconka and pisanka, how did the Saxons and angles "literally invent" that. And the Slavic thing where they would visit the graves of loved ones and give gifts to one another.

I never said that they did.

Okay, I'm just annoyed at the spreading of the "Christians stole easter from the pagans who invented it" idea.

I mention the polish and Slavic things because I don't like the attribution of east European things to the British isles.

    astonishingly appropriate

    Well, Aondeug DOES follow me.

I almost reblogged this for jesuotaku's reply, but then I saw the next reply...
HAHAHAHAAAAAA. It’s nice to know I can’t get my rights respected, but a bunch of childish, entitled white cis men can!
Seriously, what the fuck is with this thing some bloggers do where they throw "white" in the middle of some topic that's not related to race? Do they think it's an insult or something??
  • kill living beings
childish, entitled white anglo-saxon protestant cis men, hth
  • people on tumblr keep saying that white and cis aren't insults (so you can't be insulted if they are used on you), but then they turn around and try to use them as insults.

not that they actually are insults. basically it's a way of trying to have their epithet cake and eat it to

I do genuinely think that if you're offended by someone calling you white then you need to reevaluate where your priorities are, but that doesn't really make trying to use it as an insult any less childish.

What's especially bizarre is that a lot of the people to try to use things like "white" and "cis" as insults are themselves white and/or cis

White guilt is a powerful thing. So is the desire for approval.

    true.

im pretty sure i've never seen a black or trans person try to use either as an insult

It gets more complicated on Tumblr when you have hormonal teenagers who happen to be minorities in the mix. They tend to realize how pliable these people are, and take out their anger on them by telling them to become Internet police against the things that these teenagers hate.

  • gandhi did/thought a lot of crap things, but he had good PR and he did the whole nonviolence thing so you know

  • My dreams exceed my real life
    Those look like shitty sources.

There's a good point buried in there about not ignoring people's faults because they did good things, but it's not near the surface.

Also I doubt people using Gandhi as an example of a good person are particularly focused on his personal dealings so much as his way of achieving goals non-violently.

The tendency among radical leftists to be super-critical of pacifism creeps me out, honestly.
  • kill living beings
gandhi had problems, mother theresa had problems (though i'd go for the whole beauty of suffering thing), person who calls people evil for the sake of looking more just has problems

Speaking of which Karl Popper was an outrageously shitty historian.

    He is right though.

    Yeah.

Also there's a little of a "oh what are you a bourgeoisie liberal "ally" who wants trans people to be nicer to the bigots who beat them?"

Didn't Churchill get booted pretty much immediately after the end of WWII because he was a really shitty leader at anything other than "killin' Nahtzees"?
  • Alright so from what I've seen the points of contention are mainly that her hospitals weren't as good as Western hospitals (in India? Whodathunkit?) and the whole beauty of suffering thing. Which seems like a valid viewpoint to me, to be honest. Like, I don't agree with the Buddhist ideal of becoming detached, but that doesn't mean I'm offended by it and it's every bit as valid as any other philosophical viewpoint.

    Yup.

I was actually quite aware of Gandhi's personal issues through my mother, who reads a lot about this stuff and is generally unafraid of... bluntness.

    yeah
The thing about Churchill that is generally accepted is that he was a skilled tactician and a pretty good hardball diplomat, but his administrative talents and economic acumen outside of war were generally non-extant.
