i started watching Saikano, not knowing that apparently it is supposed to be flat out one of the most emotionally devastating things ever, but i am already hooked RIP in peace me

i would have laughed so much if the last episode of Nagato Yuki-chan had just been the Endless Eight again, only modified by the inclusion of Asakura and Tsuruya but otherwise basically identical
someone on the writing team evidently thinks the same way i do
of the 2 canon anime series i'd say it's mostly just the endless eight, which accounts for around 28.57%, but you might also want to factor in the fact that the original season was aired out of sequence, bringing it up to 78.57%
if you also count spin-off series the percentage is going to be somewhat larger, though the trolling in Nagato Yuki-chan is only really trolling if you've seen Haruhi, otherwise it's just a fairly sappy romcom with a dash of melodrama
actually, Yuki-chan was mostly very sweet and not trolling at all
however Haruhi-chan is arguably all trolling, and Nyoron Churuya-san is an adaptation of an internet meme which i think speaks for itself
of course that's just the anime, i didn't factor in the print media cuz i haven't read it, ditto the games or whatever else there's been
but anyway
my overall opinion of Yuki-chan is . . . i liked it! It was a lot of fun. Obviously not perfect, the animation quality was lower than Haruhi Suzumiya, the story was less original, some of the characterization was kind of off (mostly Ryoko's), but otherwise, it was good. i was glad to see the characters again, hanging out and doing their thing, and the humour was as i remembered it. Despite what i said about melodrama earlier, at times the emotional arc was actually pretty powerful (there was one episode in particular that kind of hurt). Mostly, though, it was a light, fluffy, upbeat kinda show.
i hope we'll be getting more Haruhi anime in future, but we shall see. This seems to have found a considerable audience which is a good sign i think.
Pls give it a chance. I am afraid it will be overshadowed by the superficially similar but less funny Monster Musume.

I've actually read the Monster Musume manga, it's not bad, but Actually, I Am is much better and certainly funnier. Even sexier, which says more about the former than the latter.
Today i got to the bit with Splash and Splatter and the blood donation, and i have to ask, is there much more of the queerphobic bullshit?
i was actually OK with Mr 2 Bon Kurei, who was funny but also endearing, and i thought Ivankov and Inazuma were actually really good representation, but ever since Sanji got sent to that island the stereotyping has gotten really nasty, and it's really unpleasant to watch.
Like i'm reluctant to stop watching because i've been really enjoying the show up until now, but if there's much more of this i'm not sure i can be bothered.
I haven't gotten anywhere near that far in One Piece, yet, so please let me know if it is a major thing in the future. Once again, I will be genuinely frustrated by Naney's post if it it turns out to just be a minor thing.

There are several episodes during which Sanji, a self-conscious womanizing character, is stuck on an island inhabited only by "okama" (possibly trans, possibly gay men in drag, possibly a mix of both). These are all burly, muscular and wearing dresses, eye shadow and lipstick, many of them have stubble, and they spend a lot of time posing and giggling. They are drawn in a style usually reserved for ugly characters, normally given only to antagonists. However they are at least nominally allies, and their queen is Emporio Ivankov, a badass in the rebel army. They repeatedly attempt to flirt with Sanji and force him into a dress; he responds with aggression and sometimes violence, but they seem to mistake this for playing hard-to-get. They are also all martial artists, and during the timeskip Sanji apparently spent 2 years training against them, a period which he refers to as 'hell'. There is a scene, post-timeskip, where a group of them attack some marines in order to help Sanji escape, and the marines are horrified; their "attack" seems to consist of little more than walking towards the marines and embracing one of them.
But prior to the timeskip, this whole subplot was given little screentime, and during the main story we had Ivankov and Inazuma being cool and awesome which made the subplot easier to tolerate, for me.
As a consequence of the time Sanji spent on the island, he is now unable to so much as look at a woman without suffering a violent, medically serious nosebleed. This eventually results in sufficient blood loss that he will die if he doesn't get a blood transfusion. After much searching, Chopper is able to find two willing donors with the right blood type, Splash and Splatter, two burly but effeminate "okama". Having regained consciousness, Sanji freaks out when he realizes that his transfusion came from them and when Usopp tells him to thank them he calls them freaks. Like the inhabitants of the island, they don't seem to mind this; all the "okama" seem oblivious to Sanji's hostility.
Admittedly, I can see why you would get frustrated by that now.
Hopefully, that will be the end of it. Once again, if it isn't, let me know.
I'll also add that "genuinely frustrated" was maybe a bit of an over-reaction on my part, so I apologize for that. I still think that "bail now" was an over-reaction in and of itself, though.

I don't remember them showing up much more than a chapter or two in the manga. Granted I barely remember anything about that arc, but yeah, they shouldn't be around too much. And the whole Sanji gets a violent nosebleed when seeing anything female goes away at the end of the arc, IIRC. But yeah, those jokes and Sanji in general are my least favorite things about One Piece.

I liked Sanji in his intro arc up through the Alabasta arc (which is still my favorite arc in One Piece) and kinda tolerated him as he slowly got worse from there. Thriller Bark was my turnng point on Sanji too.
i think my favourite arc is probably Impel Down . . . it felt like the stakes were higher and there was a good mix of humour and action. i'm not sure though, i actually thought Arlong Park was one of the best.

Impel down and the Marineford Arc after it were both really really good. But I just love the way the pacing and the way the characters interacted with each other was just done so well, even if it was before Robin joined the crew, whose easily one of my favorite characters in One Piece. Plus the stakes felt a little higher for me than Impel Down. Impel Down was definitely higher on a personal level, but the fate of a whole country as at stake in Alabasta and I really liked that. Arlong Park is good, though as far as character backstory arcs go, Sanji's is actually my favorite, which kinda funny given how much I dislike him now.
I only have one real thought to share at this time about what I just saw:

I like how the Exclusion Council commits evil entirely unintentionally.
They're just looking out for their own self-interest, which ultimately coalesces into a mob mentality. As far as I can tell, that's how a lot of the true evil in the world gets done, as opposed to the usual melodramatic motivations that anime villains tend to have.
I really enjoyed how this anime properly conveyed that idea without having to spell it out like a lot of Big Idea things do.
