i think a lot of the time people just don't understand philosophy so they feel hostile towards it

people act the same about most technical subject matter when it comes up in conversation

also i guess like Sam Harris with compatibilism they tend to just dismiss things that sound weird to them without considering whether they've misunderstood

Indeed.

Of course, it goes both ways: By marginalising a group for its interests, society encourages insularity and exclusivity in that group. Japanese society treats people with "immature" hobbies (however potentially otherwise well-adjusted) as freakish and pathetic; people with those hobbies respond by flaunting their immaturity in increasingly garish ways. It is a vicious cycle perpetuated by both sides.
