When I was 14, I was suffering though several different obsessions (yay for no SSRIs in 1991 :P) and I really, really wanted a Mac even though we had zero chance of affording anything more expensive than a calculator at the time.

The license is no charge but must be renewed September 25th of each year (regardless of when you initially begin licensing this product).
Why September 25th, of all dates? That means you'd have to renew it about a month into the semester. Why not choose, like, August 25th?
Unless this is a holdover from when we used quarters instead of semesters...
So that people can start using it, get comfortable with it, then feel annoyed when they are unable to use it any longer in their corporate or government job and then go buy a license.
I seriously suspect that software is so much more expensive than games because games need to entice people to buy but software demand is far more inelastic.

I forget how much Mathematica costs retail (almost certainly too much in a world where Maxima, its direct ancestor, is open source), but yeah, specialist software always commands a higher price. I've heard that CAD packages for aerospace engineering can easily hit 6 digits a seat, bit then, part of that cost goes into making sure the plans generated by the software don't kill people or destroy a neighborhood.

You have to be a current student to register, which would prevent the hypothetical scenario of someone graduating and continuing to try to use the free student license for their paying job
'Course, that assumes someone willing to resort to such tactics is above outright piracy anyway, which is not a given
"My theory is that the excitement surrounding men's fashion has been in direct proportion to the popularity of Mad Men. Now that people are tired of Mad Men and, even worse, Mad Men is going with more 70s-like styles, the fire is gone."
well, Mad Men did help propel the very beginnings of #menswear in getting men to be more interested in dressing well, but there hasn't really been a relationship between the two for a while

i don't think maxima and mathematica are related except for both being CASs
These sorts of things always involve a student licensing deal. If you're not a student, you don't get to use it.
