I always found it kinda funny that Hollywood opposed the VCR, given the massive source of sales that the home video market opened up.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
The TV industry, not the movie industry. The movie industry loved that they could further monetize the gobs of old movies gathering dust in their vaults.

    i am currently reading this:

You can tell that the author is big on homestuck, and it shows with the way it's formatted in places and stuff, it's pretty rad
  • y'all should read it, if only for Zeus' atrocious attempts at being cool via l33tspeak

    That was amusing. :)

Well, with a standalone DVD recorder, it's not just the DVD-R drive, it's the mastering software (DVD-Video mastering is still, to this day, a SUPER SEKRIT CLOUGHB that charges more for membership than pretty much anyone else in the industry—even PCI-SIG—does, and is still only partially documented outside of the official specifications) and the MPEG codecs. That and there's pretty much zero demand for them because of streaming services and DVRs, so supply is low and prices stay high.

Argh, I tried to install Mac OS 9.0.4 from one of my Perfectly Legal Means CDs, and it ate the System Folder and now the damn thing won't boot. :P I'm thinking I should quit until I have $30 to drop on a new SCSI CD-ROM for the thing, since installing from another hard disk clearly has problems.

In other news, my Radeon 7000 Mac Edition still works and will happily do full HD. But that can wait until I get all the other issues sorted out, and until I get an Ethernet card.

It's good to see that other webcomics are taking advantage of its being on the 'web', as MSPA does.

I think Homestuck's being influential is just inevitable. :) There can't not be readers who will see Homestuck's innovations and take influence from them!

    THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
MORE OLD TAT: We have this ancient (early 2000, judging from the dates on the chips) DVD writer here, and from what I recall, it's a DVD-R for Authoring drive. (Authoring drives support CSS. This is not the problem it was a decade ago, as CSS has long since been cracked.)

DVD-R for Authoring is thoroughly dead at this point. Pretty much all writable DVDs now are DVD-R General, DVD+R(W), or DVD-RW.

It was made by Pioneer, and internally it's very similar to the later DVR-104 (it has the motorized tilt hack). But it also has a separate analog board sitting above the deck (a lot of older drives had analog computers in them because the digital stuff wasn't up to the task). This beast is SCSI (a rarity, as almost all DVD drives, ROM or otherwise, are ATAPI), and from what I can tell it can only read pressed DVDs or its own DVD-R Authoring discs (it doesn't have an IR laser for CDs).

I notice that the SCSI chip is an LSI 53CF94...the "F" means it can do FAST-10 SCSI. That's 10 MB/s—just fast enough to write a DVD at 1x. :P

In short, it's kind of a doorstop at this point.

Argh, I'm reading about the problems on the Power Mac/Performa 6200, and pretty much all of the information about it comes from a single post on one of Low End Mac's mailing lists, with no sources cited nor any bits of code mentioned. The Left 32/Right 32 issue isn't mentioned anywhere else, not in Apple's official technical documentation for the computer, nor in the Linux drivers for the various chips on the board. Something tells me it was sloppy implementation of the Toolbox ROM on those machines (not surprising, given that it was made toward the end of the Spindler era) that caused most of the problems, and that Linux can do things in a way that escapes Mac OS's limitations.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
Then again, I read the Quadra 630's tech note, and it seems the IDE, at least, is lackluster there too. No DMA support, and LEM says there's reports of drives supporting higher PIO modes not working (which might be bullshit because I know a Quantum Fireball 1 GB worked in the 6200 I had a while back, but still).
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
Either way, if I want to get into 68k Macs, I will have to find 50-pin SCSI drives someplace. Ugh.

    Yay!
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
I went ahead and ordered a new SCSI CD-ROM for the 6360. The SATA card won't boot ATAPI drives, and I don't have the cabling to use my SCSIDE anymore, so...*sigh*

I get pretty bad spring allergies in Portland for some reason. I was taking a about three things to combat the symptoms but something was making me feel like ass the whole day. I removed one pill and still felt like ass, I looked at the two I was taking and found out that I accidently was taking two pills with the same active ingredient and giving myself a double dose of antihistamine.

Whoops. Sorry whatever vital organ was taking the brunt of that mistake. Please don't shut down on me.

William Shatner is one of those strange people that has absolutely no right to be as cool as he is, but because of said coolness, it all feels justified. I think that this quality is part and parcel to that.

He's also one of those people that randomly stopped ageing in their late 40s, which is vaguely unfair.

Very brightly colored. A tad more efficient, layout-wise, than DIA.

At some point soon I'm gonna post a picture dump.

I had fun in Ann Arbor yesterday...we stopped by Kroger, and Trader Joe's, and in the parking lot of an apparently closed Big Kmart and an empty store that looked like it used to be an ACE Hardware, and ate at Bob Evans...

I keep meaning to go out to the West Side and take some pictures of stuff but I don't know when I'll have a good opportunity to do so.

Well, that was smart. I was trying to do something at work, and I couldn't because of the residual effects of a botched SSL certificate upgrade. It's fixed now.

Also, the video capture bay at home is up and running! I can preview video in Ye Olde iMovie HD, but I haven't gotten Final Cut installed yet. I need to patch the audio on the Mac mini to my speakers, too.

    Video capture bay?

    THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
AU: Basically, an edit/video capture bay is a setup that lets you edit or capture video in one place. Behold, my messy room:

    image

The black box on the left side of my printer is my DV I/O box (an ADS Pyro A/V Link). To its right is my Mac mini G4 (an original one from 2005). Under the printer is a Sony SL-HF900 Super Betamax, and under that is a Pelican 6-way A/V switcher. Shoved into the left side next to the printer/Betamax/switcher stack (and thus barely visible) is a Datavideo TBC-1000 time base corrector (so the signal dropping from the VHS and Beta machines doesn't confuse either my TV or the DV I/O).

I have a Toshiba (Orion) DVD/VHS combo in the stand next to the cable box (a Motorola QIP6416 160 GB HD DVR). Also pictured are my cheap TV, my Wii, my ancient Altec speakers (1999 vintage!), and various other crap. The stand is from IKEA, but I don't remember what its name is.
