Lain has brought illness into this house in what I can only assume is an insidious plot to make sure we don't celebrate my birthday tomorrow.

Well, it worked, as Friday and I spend last night being very ill.

Guess there's always next week or the week after... :/

Also, I guess Friday and I have dinner sorted for the week (half of our meals will be cake).
  • hope you get better Justice

    Me too.

Not only does it suck being sick, it sucks when the other family members are either sick or a baby making me still the most able bodied person in the house...

At least I can work from home...
  • being sick sucks
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
    It does.

But at the same time, there is something perversely satisfying about knowing that how lousy you feel has a direct and identifiable source. Other days, one is not necessarily so lucky...

    I guess that is true

on the other hand, depression rarely causes one to vomit

but then again, being sick doesn't result in not eating usually

    “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I forget to eat even when I'm not feeling depressed, although I eat a lot when I actually remember to. Not in a weird anorexic-cyclical way; I just have a big appetite and a mind that wanders.

I do, however, have the exceptionally bad habit of forgoing eating when something I crave is unavailable or requires a great deal of effort to make. Balancing the scales with tea doesn't really help the fact, either.

On the plus side, I'm now no longer technically overweight...

    This is indeed catchy.

I love minimal techno, but I really don't listen to enough of it.

    welp

My stepdad is in the hospital. He was having chest pains at work, and they're not sure if he's had a heart attack or not, so they're admitting him for further evaluation.

Blah, just what I needed...I already miss my car. :(

  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Saying that that sucks royally would be an understatement.

I'm at the hospital now. e's doing okay, but they want him to stay overnight for observation. They'll know more in the morning, it seems.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Good. I wish him well, and you too.
  • Hope he recovers, Lee.

Sorry that happened, Lee.  I hope he gets better soon.

Ugh, I'm back on my blood pressure medication for the first time in months and I'd forgotten how weak it makes me feel.

    I'm just sorta...ugh

And now it turns out he's been fired. For being sick. And everyone he's spoken to so far refuses to speak to him about it at all. Mom says we have no recourse whatsoever, but he's at least trying to get someone to talk to him about it last I heard.

Just...I feel like downing a whole fifth of rum right now. Fuck my life. :P

    Jesus. >_<

There ought to be a law saying "you can't fire someone for medical problems beyond their control", though the fact that we live in a society where that needs to be outright stated speaks volumes.

CA: I know, right? But apparently, if you're a new hire and you're "on probation", you have no rights at all and if they fire you, too bad, you have to find another job. :P

I thought only retailers and other high-turnover, low-quality jobs did that shit to people. >:P

My sister in law and I are having cookies for breakfast, she mentioned that she can do this because "She's an adult", to which I replied "I'm not going to be part of your system" then we started quoting this at each other:

Yeah, my bro's wife. He's been with her a long time though, so we all used to hang out together back in the day.

So, the calendar in our kitchen has the following picture for February:

If you do not think this is the best possible picture for the month of February, you are wrong.

The windshield wipers in Mom's Pontiac are busted, which is like a deathwish in Ohio in February.

Dad's planning on taking it for repairs Wednesday, but that requires us to play the Car Shuffle game: Mom will take Dad's car to work, Dad will drive Mom's car to the dealership while I follow in my car, then I'll take Dad from the dealership and drop him off at work.

It's like that old puzzle with the chicken, the grain, and the fox.

My car has to get inspected on Wednesday. I should've had it inspected a while back but fuck the police, right?

    THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
    OLD MAC UPDATE

The new clock battery is in, so now I don't have to reset the clock every time I unplug it. It turns out the drive I wanted to use (an old 120GB Maxtor) is screwed up somehow, but I was able to dig up an 80GB Seagate and that's in and working....not that there's much different in speed, since the OldWorld PCI Power Macs could only do about 3 MB/s on the internal IDE or SCSI on a good day anyhow. This machine has no L2 cache (it was optional...smooth, Apple, really smooth), but that's on order and will be here any day now.

My next goals are to get an Ethernet card for the 6360, get the Apple II floppies made, find Zip drives for the IIgs and the Classic (since I have no other way of getting data into or out of them), and investigate putting an AppleShare server on the 6360.

80GB seems like overkill for a computer of that age, somehow.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
It is, but then, you can never have too much space. Also, part of this disk is going to have Linux on it once I get an Ethernet card and more memory.

Fun fact: Any Mac with IDE can accept up to a 120GB drive without complaining, since Macs have always used LBA mode and so there's no arbitrary BIOS limits to be worried about.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
Another odd thing I just found out, completely by accident: This thing can turn on by itself if I press TV POWER on my Verizon remote. :o

It seems that Apple and Sony were rather buddy-buddy in the pre-iMac years, and the IR receiver in this thing can apparently speak Control-S. I wonder if the volume buttons work!

    THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
Turns out they do! And when MacOS is booted, it interprets TV POWER as Shut Down.

(Why Control-S if I don't have a Sony TV? For whatever reason, Sceptre decided to use the Control-S TV codes with a few keys remapped. Then again, some Vizio TVs use one of the Samsung codes, so I can't say I'm surprised.)
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
Sony built the remote? Or it has some piece of Sony technology in it?
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
No idea, but Control-S is pretty well-documented (from sources other than Sony, at least) and they may have just went with it. The GPU in the TV is a MediaTek (the same as what the Vizio TVs used), so it's not that.

maybe now i can get over bunny
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
Bwahahah, my idea worked! I got a SATA DVD recorder from work (from a pile of drives we can't use for workly purposes), and the 6360 saw it! It won't boot from it, though (note to self: try disconnecting the HDD), and I needed the patched CD/DVD driver to get it to read anything. Still, progress.

It always bothered me that DVD burners are cheap enough nowadays to be standard equipment on pretty much all computers, but standalone DVD recorders (like you'd use with a TV) still cost like $100+

I imagine this is due to some licensing bullshit involving video formats. Doesn't help that Hollywood almost certainly doesn't want people recording and keeping things. :\
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
Hollywood/the TV industry always freaks out about recording stuff. They freaked out about the VCR, and they've freaked out about DVRs...

Though I imagine that Netflix and its ilk, providing no easy way for a consumer to keep a copy of something, would freak these companies out less.
