I question why mocking is necessary. Even if you subscribe to the theory that it somehow makes people improve (which I don't buy), doing it where they're never going to see it negates any benefit that might have.

I don't see where that implication comes from at all.

It is a natural action in social groups due to reasons such as [insert relevant knowledge of social psychology here]

but really, if it was that unbecoming, unnatural, or even just something that happened in certain situations and not in other ones, then why have we all experiences with it? I mean, I don't think anyone here or anyone ever hasn't been mocked or has not mocked someone in their life. sure, some just keep it to people who everyone mocks, like celebrities and dead philosophers, but it's still mockery. It still happens.

I'm not denying there aren't social reasons behind it. Nor am I denying it happens a lot, but honestly, if you expect to use "it just happens" as an argument to justify it in general, but a specific case of it, well. I'm afraid I don't follow your train of thought.

Well, yes, of course, but my point is simply that we create outlets for it, such as celebrities, comedies, parodies and so on because it's not an inherently wrong activity if directed at things and concepts. Sadly, while celebrities are human, we create personas and perceptions around them, which is what we mock.

I don't attempt to justify. All I'm saying is that it's a thing and it happens. There's not much you can do about it. It's not morally wrong or morally right, but it needs to have a reason behind it, if that makes sense. Like...there's nothing mockable about a disabled person, to use your example. And you don't mock one not just because it's plain unfunny but because there's nothing wrong with not being able to walk, as it's not related to intelligence or anything that they can control.

What you say on the internet, on the other hand, it's a different matter altogether.

I...don't see any reason at all for that. Like...I watch South Park and enjoy crude humor as much as the next guy, but I don't see how a person who can't walk is funny or has any property that can lead to humor.

To boil my point down, I just think that a lot of the mocking that goes on around the internet is largely unjustified. I interpreted you saying that 'it just happens' as a defense of all mocking, and was apparently wrong. So sorry about that.

See, the thing is. I don't think you'd be somehow bad by mocking the people who derive humor from that sort of thing. I'm just not sure....why exactly you would. Maybe it's just my state of mind right now though. It is almost 2am where I am.

Nor do I really think that people who make fun of the handicapped are really on the same level as people who have odd fetishes or whatever, but a lot of folks have strong reactions to sexual stuff for some reason.
