In other news, the new guy in the SA thread has gone from "OHMYGOD get out of there these people will eat you alive like the wolves they are" to "the greatest poster of all time"
It's starting to seem like, if he's not just a troll, he's never used another website besides TVTropes, ever.
I question why mocking is necessary. Even if you subscribe to the theory that it somehow makes people improve (which I don't buy), doing it where they're never going to see it negates any benefit that might have.
If mocking people would make me popular, or garner me approval, peace, improvement, benefits, immunity-of-malice or attention from the majority, then mock I will. Regardless of the sensibilities of the target, because the approval of many outweighs the disapproval of one.
People should not forget that a real human being exists on the other end of the wires, is my general thought. If you wouldn't do it face-to-face, you probably shouldn't do it on the Internet either; grow some moral principles.
Way to assume everyone on the internet is a giant pussy.
Someone, please give me directions to Fast Eddie's sailboat house or whatever and I'll gladly tell him how out of it he is.
Granted, it'd be kind of pointless given he wouldn't know who I am, but that's beside the point.
"It's just a thing that happens" would imply it's a natural process, like precipitation or photosynthesis, or otherwise not under human control.
I don't see where that implication comes from at all.
It is a natural action in social groups due to reasons such as [insert relevant knowledge of social psychology here]
but really, if it was that unbecoming, unnatural, or even just something that happened in certain situations and not in other ones, then why have we all experiences with it? I mean, I don't think anyone here or anyone ever hasn't been mocked or has not mocked someone in their life. sure, some just keep it to people who everyone mocks, like celebrities and dead philosophers, but it's still mockery. It still happens.
Lumping everything that is superficially similar into one category is a dangerous practice.
Surely you can distinguish between mocking celebrities and say, making fun of the disabled?
I'm not denying there aren't social reasons behind it. Nor am I denying it happens a lot, but honestly, if you expect to use "it just happens" as an argument to justify it in general, but a specific case of it, well. I'm afraid I don't follow your train of thought.

So uh, am I supposed to read this as "I don't know what I'm talking about, but listen to me anyway?" or something else?
Surely you can distinguish between mocking celebrities and say, making fun of the disabled?
Well, yes, of course, but my point is simply that we create outlets for it, such as celebrities, comedies, parodies and so on because it's not an inherently wrong activity if directed at things and concepts. Sadly, while celebrities are human, we create personas and perceptions around them, which is what we mock.
I'm not denying there aren't social reasons behind it. Nor am I denying it happens a lot, but honestly, if you expect to use "it just happens" as an argument to justify it in general, but a specific case of it, well. I'm afraid I don't follow your train of thought.
I don't attempt to justify. All I'm saying is that it's a thing and it happens. There's not much you can do about it. It's not morally wrong or morally right, but it needs to have a reason behind it, if that makes sense. Like...there's nothing mockable about a disabled person, to use your example. And you don't mock one not just because it's plain unfunny but because there's nothing wrong with not being able to walk, as it's not related to intelligence or anything that they can control.
What you say on the internet, on the other hand, it's a different matter altogether.
So uh, am I supposed to read this as "I don't know what I'm talking about, but listen to me anyway?" or something else?
"Take what I'm saying with a degree of salt"
with that said, you should listen to me, anyway. You shouldn't have to agree with me, though. /Semantics
Also you seem to be assuming that mockery needs to have a reason behind that. That is not, in my experience, the case.
There needs to be a reason. There doesn't need to be a good reason.
I know a number of people who would disagree.
I...don't see any reason at all for that. Like...I watch South Park and enjoy crude humor as much as the next guy, but I don't see how a person who can't walk is funny or has any property that can lead to humor.
Well I'm not saying you would. I don't think you're a jerk like that.
I'm just saying, there are people who find wheelchairs or deformed faces utterly hilarious.
I got rather majorly sidetracked.
To boil my point down, I just think that a lot of the mocking that goes on around the internet is largely unjustified. I interpreted you saying that 'it just happens' as a defense of all mocking, and was apparently wrong. So sorry about that.
In any case I'm way too tired to argue this anyway, so. I'm going to stop now.
See, the thing is. I don't think you'd be somehow bad by mocking the people who derive humor from that sort of thing. I'm just not sure....why exactly you would. Maybe it's just my state of mind right now though. It is almost 2am where I am.
Nor do I really think that people who make fun of the handicapped are really on the same level as people who have odd fetishes or whatever, but a lot of folks have strong reactions to sexual stuff for some reason.

Checking out TV Tropes.
First time reading Absent Tropers in a few days.
It's a fucking good thing I have a drink that's basically ~8 shots of alcohol sitting next to me right now because I fucking need it as well as all the gratuitous cussing.
Shit, if Rufio can be Tavros's fake soul-bonded entity, then Roxy can be mine.
Hah, look at all those pathetic goons posting so much about TVTropes in their goon-circlejerk," said the person posting on a forum with multiple pages examining individual people posting things they disagree with on the basis that they think it's rude to make fun of pedophiles.

It was cool while it lasted.
And they're back to wikigroaning, this really does suck

That's quite a silly thing to say, in my opinion.
Also I think most people are against mocking on at least some level. It simply depends on who's being mocked and why.

Unless you're making some arbitrary distinction between "mocking" and "making fun of", but I'm not.
You're kind of bad at this, Viani.

I can't read the thread now but, I assume it was just one guy dissing Doctor Who.
Running out of material much? "Hey this person likes a 8itchy character from a we8comic and likes to type like her!"
Why does the cart pusher post in TVT anyway? I mean he shits all over art yet hes on a website devoted to culture.
