Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
It's weird to me, because prior to MLP:FiM i tended to avoid fandoms anyway, and one of the reasons i became more relaxed towards them was seeing how chill and basically self-aware the bronies seemed to be for the most part.
i mean there were always creeps but before it felt like they were in the minority.

When I first saw those comics, I didn't realize they were anthropomorphic versions of the ponies. Their faces looked so flat that I assumed they were humanized but still had wings and horns and stuff.
I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
Honestly, my opinion of the show itself has lowered. I still like it somewhat, but not the way I did around a year or two ago.
At the very least it's one of the few things of value on its network, but there's better animation elsewhere (past and present) and the show isn't exactly God's gift to mankind.
The fandom just seems to be kind of in a downward spiral, going by secondhand accounts.

I can't really comment on fandom drama and craziness. Like Bobby, I don't participate in any fandoms. I've seen a few bizarre and unsettling pornfics myself, but I don't go actively looking for them.
The thing with Problem Sleuth is, even though i was late reading it and i didn't get to follow it as it unfolded like with Homestuck, to me it's basically perfect.

anthropomorphic ponies

There's fan-service contained in a lot of it, no doubt about it.
It's not just that, though. It's like, a really fawning kind of fanservice trying to pass itself off as innocent comedy, or something.
Oh. Well, better than actual ponies at least.

They don't look like poorly-disguised fetish material.
