You don't always need the max HP, at least not on an overview bar. Keep it around in a detail frame for sure.
Lacking both max HP AND some kind of visual indicator of the current fraction, yeah that's bad.
Trails in the Sky for instance only shows the current value on top of the bar when in combat. You don't really have much use for the max value since your MP is expected to last a good while, and you rarely need to completely top off HP instead of just bouncing it up to within a couple hundred of the top (and when you do, it's usually from the menu where you can see the max, or in a battle close enough that overhealing and efficiency is not your biggest concern).
Part of me almost wants to laugh, because this totally explains my earlier complaint about Sarah's death not having any consequences for Luke or Jane. Only part though. Most of me's actually horrified by this.
So, you decided to give one of the most horrifyingly drawn-out deaths in the series to a girl who's only crime is not being suited for the end of civilization. Y'know, like most young people in America are.
Hell, when you definitively killed Ben Paul, who accidentally got a small child killed and endangered everyone else around him constantly, you gave him a mercy kill. Didn't let him die screaming in pain. Let me repeat that: you punished an innocent girl worse than a guy who killed 6 people through sheer stupidity.
And to that end, you tore up a good part of your ending. You basically truncated the plotline concerning her relationship with Clementine. Her death had no consequences for Luke or Jane (besides a brief scene where Kenny yells at Luke, not for killing Sarah, but for endangering the baby), whose culpability is ignored in favor of joking about their impromptu affair. You claim that every action has consequences, Telltale. It doesn't work unless everybody's actions have consequences. You can't have Luke angsting about how everyone got killed under his leadership and then ignore that for some cheap innuendo.
This isn't just needlessly cruel torment of a character. This is bad storytelling. And that's the one thing you're supposed to be good at, Telltale. Your action bits are glorified cutscenes with the occasional quick time event; your point-click adventure bits get pared down more and more every game. Storytelling is the one thing that we still trust you to do, even after The Wolf Among Us. So don't you dare eff up the one thing you can still do consistently just to satisfy a few a-holes who want to torture a character. That's what fanfiction is for.
I'm well-aware that Telltale can be terrible at its job. The sloppy ending of The Wolf Among Us is evidence enough. I just prefer that to be due to incompetence or negligence rather than vitriol.
The Year is 2015. The planet Sierra is gripped by fear and is in the midst of a deep crisis.
The evil terrorist group, Scarlet are still a commanding force. They have the power to prevent humans travelling to and from the outside universe.
Scarlet's members consist of artificial beings creates using super genetic engineering by the Sierrans. Scarlet is an underground organization that has been secretly formed with the express intention of destroying the human race.
In addition to their high level of intelligence and awesome strength, Scarlet's members are equipped with parasitic abilities that allow them to live within human beings, animals and machinery. Equipped with these abilities they conquered the Sierrans and stand on the brink of obtaining supremacy over Sierra
Epsilon-Eagle, the boss of the Scarlet group, is the intended target of an assassination attempt being planned by Sierrans. A special combat group, capable of using super powers, was secretly dispatched to carry out this mission.
Scarlet unleashed a sudden attack on epsilon with their super powers. Epsilon, seriously damaged by the attack, was thrown into the time-space continuum which had been activated by Scarlet's use of super powers.
With Epsilon seemingly gone forever, Xi-Tiger' took control of Scarlet amidst the resulting confusion. With Xi-Tiger now in charge, the terrorist attacks against Sierrans became more frequent and brutal.
With this increase in attacks towards Sierrans, Xi-Tiger soon became unpopular amongst Scarlet members. As a result, the demands for the re-instatement of Epsilon as the leader of the Scarlet group became stronger.
Having been isolated from the other Scarlet members, Xi-Tiger Decided to assassinate Epsilon. In an attempt to activate the Time-space continuum, Xi-Tiger ordered an attack on the Sierrans' research laboratory, where children with super powers were behind held hostage having been kidnapped.
Xi-Tiger sensed something was wrong. He could feel the presence of Epsilon in one of the boys. However, he was unsure because he couldn't pinpoint the evil from Epsilon, who had entered the boy's body and was now living as a parasite inside of him. In an attempt to get Epsilon out of the Boy's Body, Xi-Tiger took a young girl hostage and threatened to kill her unless Epsilon released the boy.
The boy flew into a rage and morphed his body into Epsilon
Suddenly, where the boy had been standing, now stood a 'Birdman' with steel wings.
Epsilon's mind was in conflict as a battle between it's real nature, human justice, and the foreign force raged on.
Xi-Tiger could sense an unknown power within Epsilon, and fled immediately having killed the girl first.
---Epsilon--- 'Xi-Tiger, I will never let you get Away.'
Epsilon is not the only creature of his kind. Somehow Another 'Birdman' with a similar body had been created. Although their bodies were identical, their minds were very different. Unknown to everybody, the mind of the Mysterious new 'birdman' was filled with an evil ambition
He also flew off in search of Xi-Tiger..............

In Mario 2, I always assumed Subcon was a real shared dream universe, and Mario and his friends really saved it, even if they did do it in astral projection form.
People sometimes get angry about us getting a reskinned Doki Doki Panic instead of the real Super Mario Bros 2, but what they forget is that Doki Doki Panic was a way better game than Super Mario Bros 2

...which game are you referring to, specifically.
Yes.
But which yes.
I have rarely played Telltale's games but I've seen enough of them played to know that their entire design philosophy (both in terms of gameplay and storytelling) are very far from what I want out of a game of any sort.
Yes, but even still, they had some weird design decisions. Like not being able to sidestep in the first game (which thankfully they added in the second).
Atari was so far behind at that point that pretty much nothing would have helped. They actually would have done better to wait out the 1990s and come back when those damn little 20-in-1 game joysticks were popular.

For example, if it displayed 123/170 then the bar would be redundant.
It's infuriating and terrible

also, shared dream universes are cool.

It's nearly over. Just 4 more floors to go.
And that's a wrap. Beat the game with two of the squishiest classes available, because why the hell not.
The first 3 games are on DS, but the first 2 are... kinda dated by today's standards. Which is kinda odd, considering they came out in 2007 and 2008.
I only played down to like dungeon level 2 on the first one. Far enough to meet the rapgelope.
Also how that piece of chalk squeaks as if it were a dry erase marker.
