FF1 is exceptionally boring in the way only NES games can be but it has aged surprisingly well for an NES game and for an older RPG. I find it a very relaxing game with a surprising amount of depth.
tbh when i played ffi (the GBA remake, i never had a nes, ha ha casual) i was mainly struck by how D&D it is
i mean the mechanics aren't like D&D but they basically just digitized a monster manual for the random encounters. it's nuts. like fuck it let's just put in naga*. whatever man copyright is only in your head
* mythological, but in ffi they're like they are in dnd, weird huh
again, probably more from Wizardry than D&D (Wizardry also cribbed heavily from D&D, and is much more popular in Japan than D&D is. If you talk about Dungeons & Dragons in Japan people will think of the Capcom games first usually).

I remember seeing the Piscodemon and Mindflayer too, and wondered "hold on aren't those property of somebody?" and they had the obvious beholder look alike in there too.

look at all that weeby stuff though. everybody plagiarizin everybody else.
it's pretty bizarre how rpgs developed in all these directions from D&D. have you ever looked at alshard? for the life of me i can't see it as anything but a dumbass mishmash of all the techno fantasy stuff in JRPG video games. but then from the western tradition it has an eastern country of samurai and ninjas and i don't know where i'm going with this

I know Dragon Quest is the one that actually pulled like, all of itself, from Wizardry, so maybe FF just decided to swipe from someone else (as I said, D&D's presence in Japan, especially in the 80s, was minimal).

so did they evolve to be better or worse for farming D&D for ideas?
By Kabbalah technology, Reich's army possesses many modern weapons including tanks and airships, and is the strongest military force in Midgard. The same person holds posts as the Kaiser and the Pope in this theocratic state. The present Kaiser, Gustav Joseph II, is a very taciturn and incredibly old man at the age of 412 years. It would be a large incident if he said just one word. The line of Kaisers born in the monogenesis from the women who were called Blessed Virgin. To prevent the accident, several clones of Blessed Virgin are made, but subjects of Reich are not told the truth. Some propagandas tell that these clones are twins. These tragic Blessed Virgins appear in early scenarios as beautiful and innocent heroines whom questers should help.
if you've played many JRPGs you can probably conjure up a few antecedents here, know what i mean
I can recommend NES 3, SNES 4 (a.k.a. 2), SNES 5 with RPGe fan-translation, SNES 6 (a.k.a. 3), and maybe GBA TA.
I have played some of the others, but I'm not sure I'd readily recommend NES 1 or 2, GB Legend, SNES Mystic Quest, PC 7, PS1 7, or DS 4HL. And I haven't played enough of PS1 Tactics or GB Adventure.
I put system names before them because some of them have multiple versions, and then after I did it for some I decided to do it for all.
NES 3 was okay. DS 3 was grindy trash even compared to NES JRPGs.
FF1 was playable if simplistic. FF2 in general was kind of a disaster -- they took a risk before it was feasible.
speaking of the Kabbalah, did you know that Wizardry IV's secret ending (spoilers for a game from the 80s) requires you to, among other things, walk on an invisible ledge between two buildings and teleport to a room below the very first floor of the game, in which, you have to traverse a representation (in the gamespace) of the Kabbalist Tree of Life where you have to answer a bunch of riddles. If you get all of them correct your character, the (formerly) wicked Wizard Werdna, attains enlightenment. This is the game's 'best ending'.
i don't know if anyone said it was revolutionary though
i mean even with my paltry knowledge of JRPGs it seems like kind of the opposite of that
I'd consider it a really impressive iteration over Dragon Quest I and a decent translation of DnD mechanics
One of the first major success stories in extensive iteration, maybe?
lol
"it's a revolution in being an obvious next step"
Don't be mean
sorry i didn't mean to insult you (i know it reads like that but i am not verbose atm) it's just an amusing stretch
I just think a lot of the things Final Fantasy I did, in terms of what it chose to add to the formula established by Dragon Quest, were quite meaningful for the progression of RPG video games and.... eugh, I'm tired and can't construct shit and this is nothing to actually get hot 'n bothered about
*...did Fang and Cid switch sides completely the fuck offscreen
*Anime Cid fucking blows
*The scene where Sazh's son crystallizes was shockingly effective... for like thirty seconds. Then it becomes the most actively contemptible scene in the game. Fuuuuck I hate everything that happens on that scene where they're standing in front of damn Castlevania.
*I spoilered that but it doesn't matter because this game sucks.
*Anime Cid fucking blows.
*I was really thinking this game was terrible but inoffensive, fun in a "so bad it's good" way, but the amount of fucking self victimizing "GO AHEAD AND KILL ME!!!!" bullshit that happens in this game is legitimately making me fume.
Also that's just... not how I operate? I'm not playing this for the gameplay (which is good, because the gameplay fucking blows too). I'm trying to understand it after years of being told conflicting things.
So basically it's interesting for the same reason I found Guilty Crown interesting, which was that I was tired of hearing people malign it so damn often that I wanted to see it for myself.
Lightning Returns was...marginally more playable and had a good premise, but the execution was still very very meh and the story was still a mess. It doesn't help that the game is based entirely around one of the least interesting and compelling characters in the entire series.
We get it Lightning. You have the emotional capacity of a turnip. Can we please talk to someone likable or at least expressive.
I remember watching a video of some romhack of FF6, and the guy playing it briefly did a segment comparing the development process of FF6 vs FF13.
Apparently in FF6, the whole thing started with a few dudes in an office just coming up with D&D style character sheets. There wasn't a story at all yet, they just came up with characters. Then they built backstories on the characters, and then the world around their backstories. Then the story built on top of all of that. The whole thing was fundamentally rooted in people playing off of people.
FF13 was the opposite. A couple guys in an office wrote out the whole story Mad Libs style. There were literally places in the script that said "Character A" and stuff. They wrote out this whole pretentious clusterfuck without coming up with a single actual person along the way, before handing it off to character design and telling them to fill in the blanks and string these often very disparate scenes together. It was fundamentally rooted in wanting to tell a story, but divorced from the actors that would be in it.
I'm not certain how true it is, but goddamn would it explain a lot. Sazh's scene, Fang joining you abruptly, etc.
The number one thing they did wrong was creating this giant grand Fabula Nova Crystallis Project before thinking "hey, maybe we should add characters first? Nah. Just add them hot anime tiddies.
in other RPG news I think I have the hang of Etrian Oddyssey III now, at least in general. I'm quite enjoying it.
There are some things I need to work out--such as how tf to get my wildling in the back row to be useful when she's not summoning her Snake Friend--but it's fun.
