Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
What game is this, Mega?
I'd be tempted to make them say "Hail Satin" and see how many people spot the typo.

You know, I've never played an Animal Crossing game before. I should probably get the 3DS game whenever it comes out.
However, I have read The Terrible Secret of Animal Crossing. I'm well aware that the games' tone isn't actually like that.
I have to wonder if the whole freak-out over merchandise-driven toys in the 1980s wasn't so much over the merchandising, but that in the most famous cases, it was the first mainstream appearance of modern comic-book culture, and that kind of scared the straights.
I know, a few things were based off of tabletop games or even greeting cards, but Transformers G1 and G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero were as much Marvel's babies as they were Hasbro's, and things like Galaxy Rangers and ThunderCats dipped into harder sci-fi and anime tropes -- as much as they could, anyway, given advertiser squeamishness.
People who knew nothing about comics books except maybe the Archies or the Disney comics, i.e. "what sold at the supermarket". Even Superman, Batman or Spidey would be a bit much to them, and if they knew them, it was either from the movies, the 1960s TV show, or...The Electric Company. Really.
^ That term is new to me. What is the origin of that? It bugs me, for some reason.
I'm feeling kinda irritable. I have no way of completing all the reading necessary to give myself the best shot at passing my exam on Saturday; I'm simply out of time. My favourite local payphone (yes I have one of those, shut up) got vandalized again. Last time it was just the kiosk, this time they severed the handset and ripped a bunch of wires out. I feel like I've spent most of today rushing about and I didn't get to finish dinner.
And I've just bitten into an apple pie and apparently they've changed the recipe, and the new one tastes terrible. Bleh.
These aren't even first world problems, they're just... agh. And this bloody cold and earache won't go away and it's been days.

Fouria G and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
Silliness aside, sorry to hear that. I hope things get better soon.

Don't worry about it. Last week, I complained here about cutting my finger while taking out the trash. We've all done stuff like that sometimes.
I bought it from Lidl, so I suppose I'm getting what I paid for.
It was a Northwoods fruit pie, though, and those used to be quite nice.
I am actually really incensed about that payphone thing. I mean, BT aren't even putting up new ones. That's expensive damage and there's a real risk that BT will just decide it's not worth the effort maintaining it.
"Straights" in this sense seems to be a rather old term...I know it crops up on Frank Zappa's Uncle Meat (1969). Basically, people who try to be conformist rather than being weirdo nerds or hippies or freaks or whatever.

Third rule: There is no third rule. It's just a placeholder.
I discovered this rapper, Madwiz the Bandit, off of a cypher someone posted a video of on Youtube, his mixtape on its official site has like five downloads.
You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
Sometimes I have anxiety over enjoying news music. Sometimes I read something about how it's canned or generic or something.
Now I'm wondering if Frank Gari's '90s synthesized stuff was ever really that great. It has this certain charm and warmth to it though I'm not sure it's intentional.

Also, silly Fouria, nobody here is going to judge you for having a favorite payphone.
I used to have a favorite road sign. It was outside the entrance to the Columbus Zoo. It said something like:
<-- COLUMBUS ZOO
<-- COLUMBUS 17 mi.
(The amsuing bit being that, as always, the "Columbus Zoo" is actually quite a few miles outside Columbus.)
Unfortunately it was removed when State Route 750 was re-aligned a few years back, and I don't think a replacement was ever posted.
I don't remember the guy's name offhand, but he wrote an article called "a guide to sampling in the age of Youtube", and in it, he mentioned that news music packages and commercial background music is a great source for samples for a variety of reasons.
re, payphones: I like them too, actually. There's a row of them that is visible on the cover of A Line of Telephones.
One interesting thing about history is how sometimes entire nations get lost to time. It may just be personal ignorance in this case, but I've never heard of Gwynedd before.

...now I'm wondering which packages he thinks are good for sampling; my mind immediately went to In-Sink V.3 (maybe it's my association of it with KWGN-TV and 615's general lack of presence on Denver TV speaking, but it sounds very 615 to me).
Re: "News music", it's a really broad category. I doubt anyone thinks "The Mission" is canned or generic, except maybe the odd classical snob.
Some music is produced to a set of specifications and intended to produce a particular effect and emulate a particular sound. Some people disapprove of this, and I can definitely see where they're coming from. There's nevertheless a craftsmanship that goes into producing it, and I don't think that warrants dismissal or scorn.
>Also, silly Fouria, nobody here is going to judge you for having a favorite payphone.
>_>
(It's a bilingual KX100D with the coloured piper logo, and it was recently repaired and consequently looks brand new. I have to pass it every time I go into town, so I'm more fond of it for its familiarity than anything)
>Unfortunately it was removed when State Route 750 was re-aligned a few years back, and I don't think a replacement was ever posted.
That's a pity.
Speaking of road signs, what is the joke here? I remember seeing it on the old Trash Heap as well and I never understood it then.
>re, payphones: I like them too, actually. There's a row of them that is visible on the cover of A Line of Telephones.
Yeah, that was cool.
Which reminds me, I was going to binge the music thread.

I've heard of that one but I don't know anything much about it.
But it's pretty crazy how many countries there used to be in Europe. All the tiny Germanic nations and such.

Oh right, that one. That was actually sort of a non-joke; a year or so ago I was sleep-deprived and thought it would be funny to post a random road sign picture in response to Deathonabun talking about being gay. When I told him this, he thought it was hilarious for some reason and it became kind of an in-joke.
The only real notable thing about the picture itself is that the center sign is in a state of disrepair; the "l" has fallen off of "Columbus" and "EXITS 43 A-B" has become "EXITS A- ".

Besides Lolita, of course.

I am made so, so uncomfortable by this.

oh god, lee
I beg of you, please don't turn into one of those people who condescendingly calls non-whatever fans "straights", "normies", whatever
it will harm my soul.
Thanks, Professor.
Sorry about that. That was a really stupid outburst.

This might be why the term bugged me. Or just because it sounds like a word created to describe a "them", as opposed to an "us".

(I feel kind of embarassed now. That was probably my whiniest outburst since the first angst thread.)
I expect everyone here owns at least a few albums that at least a few heapers won't have heard of.
Good night, Professor.
Action Bronson's producer would disagree.
