I didn't expect the knowledge that I conceptualize my face as a mirror image of what it actually looks like to fuck me up as much as it is right now when I realized/learned it years ago, but it is.
this might be a dumb question but is descriptivism vs prescriptivism actually a thing in academia, that linguists seriously argue about?
it feels like one of those daft dichotomies that probably wouldn't be taken seriously outside internet arguments anymore, like bayesianism vs frequentism

No, it isn't.
Prescriptivism hasn't been taken seriously by real linguists in years.
'You should refer to people by the pronoun which pertains to their professed gender identity, not one they were assigned at birth' is a prescriptivist statement.
'Singular "they" is commonly used with reference to unknown or hypothetical individuals, but is not conventionally used with reference to people with a known gender, non-binary or otherwise' is a descriptivist statement.

Linguists are descriptivists in that they are scientists, who describe things. The question of whether people should use dictionaries to prescribe is out of scope, and people actually doing so is probably a subject of descriptive interest itself.

fucking seriously, the Tumblr app keeps putting out periodical updates and you can't fucking exit out of a fullscreen image in a text post, for fucking real
You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022

that makes sense i was thinking along those lines
like, descriptivists are, or may be, concerned with the rules of the language such as they exist, which would include rules set forth by stylisticians
