when i was little i was admonished by my mother many times that i could not sing the national anthem in public, because it would mean that everyone would have to stand, because not standing during the national anthem is disrespectful

i used to believe it was the law that we had to stand up whenever "God Save the Queen" played on TV or the radio

but like, i'm pretty sure something like this would be considered inappropriate over here, or at least a bit ridiculous (irrespective of the quality of the performance itself)

    but, by way of counterpoint

which seems far more audacious, but was definitely a one-off

    glad you agree!

I guess it doesn't help that many of the people in the region aren't actually from the region, and those who are rarely seem to leave and attain any sort of positions of influence in the broader culture (except like Matt and Trey, who I know you hate)

y'know i think the reason i reacted so negatively to the London 2012 opening ceremony is, to me it felt like they "weren't taking it seriously", that it wasn't traditional or stately enough

but now having seen a couple Super Bowl games, it was kinda like the music and entertainment associated with those, i guess

meaning the mood and stuff, there were similarities in the approach maybe

yeah, the Super Bowl is a big, populist orgy

There was a period from 2005-2010 (Super Bowls XXXIX-XLIV) when the halftime shows were all fairly conservative performances by classic rock acts because the NFL was afraid of a repeat of XXXVIII's "wardrobe malfunction" (which, mind you, was something that CBS and MTV deliberately planned behind the league's backs), but they've loosened up.

The one Prince did at XLI had a resurgence upon his death.

well i had specific things i didn't like, i felt the pastoralism at the start was embarrassing and that if they were going to attempt to represent folk traditions they should have, actually attempted to portray folk traditions and not the theme park version thereof

i also felt Emeli Sandé performed Abide With Me very badly, that she sounded weak and lacking in confidence

additionally i remember being kind of humourless about the Queen appearing in the James Bond parachuting skit, that i felt it was a silly stunt that made us look dumb

plus the bits about the steel industry and the NHS kind of pissed me off cuz at the time i was feeling very resentful of the Conservative government and it felt like they were rubbing it in our faces?  though of course the government didn't write the ceremony and perhaps those parts were even intended as a political statement? idk

it's weird trying to cast my mind to this cuz it wasn't that long ago but already it's odd to me that any of it annoyed me as much as it did, like i can remember being annoyed at particular things but not why they were annoying to me, i cannot empathize with my 2012 self to that degree apparently

that looks a lot like how RTD's "theRide" buses once did

they repainted them all blue in the early 2000s, and it's an ill-fitting shade

    what makes it ill-fitting?

Lancaster (and amusingly-named sister town Intercourse) isn't that far from here though and that's an interesting place.
