Democrat is basically synonymous with liberal, in the same way Republican is synonymous with Conservative.
I've heard you can trace a line from what's called Social Liberalism from thinkers generally considered parts of the liberal tradition(Mill, Locke) down to Democrats, but you can also trace economic liberalism down to people who are now on the right in American politics.
Oh what the hell, i'm just gonna ask, and if it's a stupid question then at least i'll know better from now on.
It has been my impression that mainline Democratic policy has been *basically* neoliberal, or at least, has had neoliberal aspects, since Bill Clinton at the very latest. Am i mistaken?
Yeah. Doesn't change the fact that the average American is going to be thinking in American terms when it comes up.
I once saw an argument between an American libertarian and a Chilean tumblr tanky where neither could figure out why they both thought the other was a liberal.

Mind you, Liberalism as outlined by Mao appears to mean "shitty behaviors described so broadly that it could mean anyone" if you read Combat Liberalism.
Approximately 94 percent of Japanese homes are equipped with a personal computer. The typical home computer system features 32 megabytes of user memory as well as hard copy, communications, and storage peripherals. Almost all home systems have access to one or more computer information networks. Computers are used for shopping, banking and a host of other activities, as citizens try to spend as little time as possible out in the polluted atmosphere.
Businesses now rely on supercomputers with 64-bit video coprocessors, floating point co-processors, and voice recognition processors. These machines also have up to 256Mb of user memory, and multiple output option module.

i think it's that, many Americans would probably consider Mao liberal, and Mao would probably consider those same Americans liberal
like they're overlapping categories (both would consider Democrats liberal) but neither considers themselves liberal.
