I saw some clickbait that said that Coke and other sodas are good for cleaning, which also obviously makes them every bit as dangerous as oven or drain cleaner. I would not be surprised if the old "look what Coke does to this nail" parlor trick came into play.
First things first: Yes, most sodas have acids in them. The particular acids matter in this case; citric and phosphoric acids are the most popular, and they have powerful chelating properties, especially toward iron. They're not concentrated sulfuric acid; just because they go ham sandwich on a nail doesn't mean they will do the same to you.
Second: Soda has water in it. Well, duh, right? Water is an excellent solvent and you can get a lot clean with just it and a scrub brush. It also attacks iron, turning it into the flaky, hydrated oxides we associate with long-term rusting.
The BBC had a recent Elemental Economics (or some name along those lines) segment about bromine, and "chemophobia" got mentioned within that segment too.

Today he has no means, he's alone and anonymous But written in his cells he has got the marks of the genius I'm looking for this man to sell him to other men To sell him to other men, to make us rich and famous I'm looking for this man to sell him to other men To sell him to other men, for ten times his price at least I'm looking for a man who's able to forget them to realize my aim
I know the last step, but I can't remember the others.

it's such a terrible show but it manages to be so entertaining in the strangest way possible, partially because of the writing and partially because of the animation itself

And the reason why your eyes water when cutting onions from the root is because the chemicals released turn into dilute sulphuric acid when they hit your eyes/

and take their weapons leaving them dead
Well, I watched it, and I enjoyed it, and thought it became quite intriguing.
I wonder how many of those people with bad opinions of it only watched the first few episodes, and didn't watch it all the way through.
