also how much grinding is advisable in this game? Things were getting rough during that Crowe bossfight and now I'm on the airship and when I stopped playing had just had some serious trouble with the first random pack of goons you fight

It gets easier once you start getting more jobs. You really shouldn't need to grind at all unless you're on Hard mode.
