Streets don't need to be at ninety-degree angles to one another. Screens don't need to be rectangular; and neither do windows; and neither do keyboards and keyboard keys; and neither do doors, or tables, or posters, or paintings.
I mean, the ninety degree angle is very pretty; and rectangles mesh together well. I like the ninety-degree aesthetic.
It's just, there are other ways. We could have hexagon-shaped buildings; or streets at sixty degree angles, or fish-shaped paintings, or a movie with the screen shaped like a triangle.
...in particular, negative reviews of 999 also leaned a bit towards "Wah! Humor!" even though the second game in the series blended humor and tension much less effectively.
It has the potential for greatness, but as-is, it caters to the short attention span, the bloodlust, the need for stimulation.
Can you imagine Spenser, Chaucer, Imipolex, Hugo, Dante, Marlowe, Shakespeare, Jonson, Austen, Brönte, or Wilde being interrupted every half-hour for commercials?

Not just every half-hour, more like every eight minutes or so
It caters to the need for stimulation because television is controlled by money-loving corporate gatekeepers and appealing to the baser instincts guarantees a wider audience

Looks like, come next Friday, they'll be far away from the Castle and the city.
What's more, it seems likely that, given current events, they'll not just leave the city, but never return.
