I should probably add for posterity that I like a handful of Nickleback songs. Mostly their older stuff and one of their popular songs that wasn't directly about sex and/or rape.

Wat.
I have only heard like four or five Nickelback songs, but none of them are about rape, as far as I can remember. :|

There's potentially a backlash against how intellectually vapid the contents of a song is. I'm not necessarily saying songs HAVE to have deep meanings, but Smooth and a sizable portion of the Nickleback songs aren't exactly electing much in the way of thought or emotion.

I'm would say the lions share of say, The Foo Fighters', Nirvana's, and Stone Temple Pilots, probably have a bit more going for them then the average Nickleback song.
Not saying there lighting the world on fire with their intellectual contributions, but most Nickleback songs that make it to the radio seem to be trying to convey the message that "Sex is GOOD!" It's not that surprising people give them a hard time over it.

I only know of one Nickelback song that's about sex (Rockstar), the others I can name off the top of my head are mostly about reminiscing on stuff (Photographs) or being emotionally fragile (I believe this one's called "Bottle"? I forget)
But anyway my point is there is not MASSIVE SEETHING HATRED for them or even, say, Foster the People, who you can make a good argument rather cynically appropriated the concept of a school shooting to make a pop song.

Whoh, really?
"Animals" and "Figure you out" used to get played all the times...and they're pretty much about nothing BUT sex. Rockstar pales in comparison.

I was under the impression that "Animals" was an album cut that tended to get made fun of, not a single.
And I don't even remember ever hearing "Figure You Out"
"Animals" got played all the time where I used to live, Central Washington. We where pretty starved for rock. IF you didn't listen to country, you had one rock station, and heaven help you if AC/DC was not your thing.

Consequently, they somehow loved Nickleback.
I dunno. Maybe a regional difference then.
There are only like three radio stations here either, so, I know that feel.

While I'm decrying all these bands, I'm just going to go out and say that there are like two good "The Killers" songs and the rest is what I've unaffectionately dubbed "Puss rock"...between this and my opinions on NT and MGMT probably makes my taste in music pretty clear...
The only Killers song I like is "When You Were Young", thanks to Rock Band 1. I don't really listen to them otherwise, mostly out of a relative lack of interest.
"All the things that I've done" got covered by British rap and hip hop artists as a charity song for a charity that campaigns to stop children fighting in conflicts.

How horrifying. Quickly! Let us ready our wit-arrows and man the firing towers!i get so angry sometimes i just punch plankton --Klinotaxis
know what I just remembered?
Santana.
I liked Rob Thomas a lot as a kid. Not sure why him and his band get so much hate.

But Matchbox 20 had like a good dozen hits.
I don't get hate for Train, either. Maybe I just have a soft spot for pop rock bands.

You could make the same case for most rock music.
Excepting Prog and some indie, of course. But generally speaking.

also it's not like this is particularly deep either and you don't hear people hating on Neon Trees.

Of course I like Neon Trees too, just saying. They seem to be immune from a lot of the criticism because they're "an indie band". Somehow.
I actually really like Train. I even sampled them once ("Hey Soul Sister" in "Elephants!")

You're literally the first one.
Congratulations, I think.
But anyway my point is there is not MASSIVE SEETHING HATRED for them or even, say, Foster the People, who you can make a good argument rather cynically appropriated the concept of a school shooting to make a pop song.
I think there's a Neon Trees song called "Kids" too.
I don't know too much about NT. Unashamed to say I like "Everybody Talks" though.

This is a top comment on a video by a band called Dead Sara, for no discernible reason.
This commenter may be a stupid ho.
I'm fairly certain NT has been around awhile though.
I'm just not sure how popular they were til recently.

also in relation to that Dead Sara video, I found this pretty horrible, honestly:
what are they going for here?
I dunno. Maybe a regional difference then.

It's funny, cuz I used to see NT praised on assorted indie music blogs all the time.
Anyway, it's MGMT time now.
I don't honestly like most of their songs, but I like this one quite a bit.

Quite.
You should probably look into Wolfmother.

For all my ragging on them, I do like Foster The People well enough.
But
I find Watsky's version of "Pumped Up Kicks" so much better.
if you know this guy at all, it's as the "Pale Kid Raps Fast" guy. Or as Shakespeare in the one Epic Rap Battle of History
"Rhymesayers is the only underground rap label, right?"
The cover imo is better than the original.
Is it German Rap-Reggae time?
I think it is.
