  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS

As an American roadgeek, motorway service stations are a novelty to me

In America, we generally only have "rest stops", which consist of just restrooms, picnic tables, and if you're lucky, some vending machines.

Full service stations are generally limited to toll roads...

They actually still exist on I-95 between Baltimore and the Delaware line, though the only toll on that stretch is at the Susquehanna River now.

    hey i remember that stretch

also the closing of the Maryland House (i didn't drive that way when the Chesapeake House was closed though)

i remember finding a convenient way to bypass the Delaware toll plaza but not the Maryland (Susquehanna River) toll plaza

i also once tried to bypass the Fort McHenry tunnel toll plaza and simply got lost in Baltimore instead lol
  • so yeah, bypassing the Delaware toll plaza involves just doing an exit, going up a stretch of road, making a turn, then coming back to the highway.

    it's the easy one.

bypassing the Susquehanna River toll plaza takes significantly longer and i never tried it.

Fun fact: roadgeeks refer to bypassing tolls as "shunpiking"

I should use that more often.  I like the sound of that word.

The Windows 10 Camera app has face recognition.

This is the most useless thing because, well, this is a webcam. The whole point of face recognition is to autofocus on faces, which you're not gonna do with a crappy integrated webcam with a fixed focus.
  • The Router's burned out, and I mean burned out. Think I tried 3 different power cords on it and I can't get a single flashing light off of it. Incidentally, we really need to get rid of if all these old router power cords

So, I'm out until Mom comes home, we work out how were going to buy a new one, and I nip down to best buy or something to grab a cheap replacement

The word shunpiking is not widely used or understood in Britain where 'turnpike' isn't used to refer to modern roads. It's not impossible that the name Stan Shunpike derives from shunpiking but it seems unlikely. I'm going to add a citation request. --Ef80 (talk) 13:21, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Today I read The Willows by Algernon Blackwood.

  • My dreams exceed my real life
    I liked it.

Incidentally "Algernon Blackwood" is the perfect name for an outdoorsy writer of horror fiction.

    agreed

    any connection to William Blackwood?
  • My dreams exceed my real life
HP Lovecraft was a neurotic shut-in, so most of his horrors are stuff that derives from repeated intrusive thoughts or nightmares.

Algernon Blackwood was an adventurer, and The Willows is more of the story a normally happy outgoing person like him tells you about a time he encountered something very strange and very frightening when he was very alone in the wilderness.

    Not that I can tell.

Also Lovecraft was an atheist, and Blackwood was an actual member of the Hermetic Order Of The Golden Dawn.
