  • i didn't like mean it in terms of closeness to one another, i meant it like in terms of telling you more useful things about the world around you

like, with Einstein's theories you can discern/predict things that you could have discerned/predicted with Newton's theories, plus more stuff, right? even if they're totally different frameworks they are both trying to do the same thing and one of them does a better job than the other.

i need to do more college im out of my league aaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
  • or after more thinking because im a slow thinker: because things are either true or untrue, theories can't advance in terms of relative truthfulness, but they can advance in terms of descriptiveness until something true and fully comprehensive is reached, but until that point you are wrong. but that's not a bad thing, it's just how things work.

im mostly talking to myself now, my brain kinda likes talking aloud while chewing on ideas, it helps me organize.

actually just so i'm clear here, the cabinet thing was popper and the einstein thing was kuhn, right? can't keep these fuckers straight.

i guess i can't deal with an idea of objective truth in the first place. newton says "i wonder why mercury's orbit doesn't change in the right way", and einstein's like "uh actually mercury is moving in a straight line". how do you sensibly evaluate truth statements like that? the truth statements of one framework don't even make sense in the other. or something

or like a billion other theories~

and i'm a neuroscientist maaaaan, imma have problems basing a notion of objective reality on subjective reality
  • ULTRA-RAD HACKER REFUGEE FROM THE FUTURE
things being either true or untrue is itself untrue anyway

there are, just to provide one of many counterexamples, subjective statements (eg. "blue is the best color").
  • im specifically talking about objective statements tho

Are you just recording it with an internal microphone on your computer or something else? I kind of what to try that.

I mean, yeah, it's still shrill and they do need someone to sit them down and say, "You can be calm about this." But it's not totally incomprehensible to me.

    Odradek said:
That is astounding bullshit and completely misinterprets the show in question on so many levels it's not even funny. Yes, the whole medium of animation as a business and Japanese culture in general have some serious problems with women and this manifests quite palpably in the behind-the-scenes and narrative aspects of a lot of anime, but the idea that Madoka Magica is misogynistic is... well, a really surface level reading of the text.

Urobuchi has problems as a writer, but thinking of women and girls as objects doesn't strike me as being one of them. He likes ideas better than messy human problems, so his messy human problems are sometimes weirdly symbolic, but that's not the same thing as misogyny or even misanthropy.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
I wonder what exactly they're misinterpreting. I mean, I've heard many times that's it's OK to like problematic things as long as you don't pretend their flaws don't exist, but what exactly am I missing here?
  • kill living beings
that's what you get for interrogating the text from the wrong perspective
  • the gist of my argument is that madoka is intended to be more universal than that, the message regarding how seemingly benign desires can be highly destructive to oneself and others is not aimed exclusively at women, but at everyone. the characters are female because it is a magical girl anime, not because it is specifically aimed at women.

of course, this opens up a whole other, more valid can of worms that i'll address in my longer post

    “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I should clarify: The statement that men with issues with women can be put into circumstances where they end up accidentally creating compelling women is completely true and it happens not infrequently, but this particular example is very badly misrepresented.

The idea that women are being punished for wanting to survive in the show is not the point. Rather, forces that see the travails of the protagonists as trivial use that deep suffering as a tool to force them to sacrifice their lives for something that is never explained to them. The system is engineered to exploit and destroy those who keep the system functional in the first place. Madoka redeems the system by making it inherently redemptive: Rather than contract and devolve into something monstrous only to be slain by one's successors, one ultimately ascends, all suffering absolved and redeemed. It is a subversion of the moral tragedy that punishes people, particularly women, for being human—like Goethe's Faust before it.

Of course, the last film turns that in a very bleak direction, but I think that they are looking at that aspect of the story with a desire to see something negative rather than see it for what it is.

  • but that's not really addressing that urobuchi said that they deserve to suffer, which is where the critique is coming from

Did Urobuchi actually say that, though?

I'd like a valid source on that before we go any further with this line of discussion.
