So, the main director-creator guy on Neon Genesis Evangelion got his start in the movie Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. So, no Nausiaä, no Studio Ghibli. Also, no Evangelion, which means Moe doesn't take off with Cardcaptor Sakura (on the same topic, no Rei clones in anime. So, without a rei clone, and without Evangelion and Cardcaptor Sakura popularizing Moe, we don't get Haruhi Suzimiya as we know it). What I mean is Cardcaptor sakura happens, but Moe never really catches on. Also, no Guren Lagann which is basically the anti-evangelion.
Not that Moe hadn't been invented (you can seethe beginnings of it in Sailor Moon); and although Cardcaptor Sakura is the magical girl show as we know it today (with Sailor Moon being a beginning).
So yeah, that is how Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind accidentally changed anime.
Also, Evangelion popularizes the high school setting for anime, though it didn't invent it.
so in the dream I had while I slept really late, there was some kinda war going on and I and other political prisoners (how did I become important enough to be a political prisoner?) were incarcerated in this very large, futuristic-looking compound with big winding staircases and huge robotic guards that resembled the Cyberdemon from Doom. Somehow we escaped in the end although the details are fuzzy, except I think we somehow turned the robot guards against each other
Anyways, according to my internet sources that are totally reliable, Evangelion popularized blood and gore in anime and stuff, as well as fanservice; but I'm pretty sure blood and gore would have become part of anime inevitably anyways, and I'm also pretty sure fanservice is required by law in Japan.

it's actually more than that - for one thing, anno's job was animating the god warrior, which mighta presaged the fucked up monster design of the angels a bit (though he didn't design them). more clearly, anno conceived of a Nausicaä spinoff following princess kushana (the cyborg), but miyazaki didn't want it connected with nausicaa, and eventually, supposedly, the princess kushana character morphed into an evangelion character, asuka. (they are both rude and imperious.)
