  • Odradek,
Also good to see you again LW.
    The feeling is mutual.

    I just kept trying.
I think that definitely makes some sense, but if it is okay to ask, what got you interested in philosophy in the first place?

    Tachyon,
Thanks for bringing that post back up, it seems insightful. That said, this probably sounds dumb, but I wonder if I kind of need an explanation for that explanation to get an inkling of what is actually going on there.
  • it seems to me that philosophy is hard to get because, like in scientific writing, philosophers try to write in a manner that fully elucidates the exact nature of what they are trying to say and their thoughts behind it. But unlike scientific writing, which uses one specific framework of thinking applied to multiple subjects, philosophy consists of a multitude of personal frameworks of thought in addition to a multitude of applications.

so like to "get" a philosophical piece you kinda have to assimilate their whole, unique method for tackling a question. Which is a sort of mental gymnastics that is not commonly used elsewhere, so one will not have a lot of practice in it.

what's going on is it's a list of specific philosophers with reasons why they're difficult

have you read Sophie's World?  as introductions go it's not a bad one
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i get the impression philosophy suffers somewhat from philosophers' desires to carve out their own special niches without encroaching on one another's territory

it's not the only field to suffer from this, it's a mentality that's common in the humanities and social sciences

y'know one thing i have wondered for a while is, is it possible to render difficult philosophers non-difficult by simply familiarizing yourself with their intellectual influences?

like, with sufficient context, would Hegel become lucid, at least relatively so?

    Also, I'm awake now.

For some reason taking short naps seems to help me through my anxiety during the evening hours. It's still something I need to talk to my doctor about, because I don't think this mood stabilizer is working like my old one was, but it's a way to cope in the meantime, you know?
