Infect is a good. It seems simple damage is no way to win in EDH. You want an infinite combo, or to drop Rite of Reflection on an infect creature, or something.

My EDH decks actually usually win with damage dealing.

My Red/Blue/Black Gorza deck usually uses giant creatures to deal the damage after a massive control campaign. Often times, it's the other players' massive creatures, blue is a bitch that way.

My Green/White/Black token deck is also usually damage. I just get out so many creatures, my opponent doesn't have sufficient blockers to do anything about it.

My black/blue unblockable/ninja deck is also usually damage. Though, this one also employs ton of control.

I guess it's pretty hard to win quickly when you're doing direct damage and your general isn't a great way to deal it all, but with lots of control and some awesome late game cards, it's quite doable.
  • Definitely.  Even my G/B Jarad deck often wins on direct damage alone.  It's often the case in EDH.  There are a lot of utility generals out there that rely on it.
  • I never understood how to use infect in EDH. At least, not attack-wise

If you use the 10 poison counters rule, then infect's overpowered. General!Skithyryx the Blight Dragon can kill a player twice as quickly as the other generals. But infect isn't mentioned in any official EDH rules.
  • I saw it being used in a magic league lately.  It can happen, it's still 10 counters and you're dead.  With double strike a Putrefax can kill in one turn with no warning.

I'd imagine Skithryx deck might have some limitations being it would have to be mono black.

This cuts down on your options of delivering poison counters pretty drastically.
  • With double strike a Putrefax can kill in one turn with no warning.

  • It's 4:20 somewhere.
Skittles can be pretty overpowered, but the thing about poison in EDH is that playing it makes it harder to engage in leveraging politics in your favor for a number of reasons.

At some point I want to build a Mimeoplasm EDH deck, because doing 21 damage with a copy of Hydra Omnivore would be hilarious even if the survivors cooperate to make sure you're the next to die.

  • The full list is up for EDH.  Overall I'd say the set doesn't compare to the Return of Ravnica but their are a few phenomenal cards in it.  I'm not looking forward to Justice running four of this guy in his Goblin Legacy deck:

But hey, I do love me them red and white angels:

    And their junk:

    Tits.
  • Maybe it's just me and my preference for most of the Guilds that we got on Gatecrash but I feel this set is better than RTR.
Anyway, time to build EDH decks like the plague.

Apparently I started a post then got distracted.

Reports from the latest Justice Friday EDH games.

Getting out Doubling Season and Cathar's Crusade makes the game hysterical for whoever had those cards and a way to generate tokens.

Also "Horesemanship"  is thematically pretty weird. It works in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms set, but my wife brought out Sun Quan who brought enough horses for her small group of Angels and Demons. My army of flying fucking horses couldn't do anything to stop them!
  • Everybody knows that horses can't be stopped when they're being ridden. Even by other horses.

That's...like elementary knowledge. Y'know, "All the Mighty Horses"? Right between the ABCs and Multiplication Rap in the school music collection.

There's a secondary server that everyone's using. Not that I use it that often; EDH is fairly rare there.

And it was awesome and it helped me learn my time tables, thank you very much.

What's great is there already was a "mounted" mechanic; flanking, which makes blocking creatures -1/-1 if they didn't have flanking.

So we might have situations where a dude on a horse STILL wouldn't be able to block other dudes on horses, because his horse is "not that kind of horse".

...What if a creature was granted both flanking AND horsemanship? Does this mean he has an ultra-mega horse, or is he riding two horses simultaneously?

Strictly speaking, flanking doesn't require horses, even if most of the related cards are horse related. See: Sidewinder Sliver and Agility.

He is unblockable accept for other people on horses who better also have a second horse or they're at -1/-1.

I wonder what's in front of him.

Probably more horses so he has trample as well.

I had to face this in EDH last night. Taking into account the mana curve in EDH and the large number of boardwipes, this was kind of scary.

I have a few strategic questions about this game:

    * how useful/important are deck thinning sorts of cards considered? does this depend on what color/colors you're using?

    * are there any sorts of general guidelines or formulas for getting a good mana curve?

    * how should one go about considering creature abilities when trying to figure out how good it is compared to its mana cost? Like for example if a creature has say Haste, would that be considered worth extra mana compared to a creature with the same power/toughness but without that ability, and if so how much? Would the answer to this question also be color-dependent?

(*some of these questions might have overly long answers, in which case i'd be cool with being pointed towards some sort of resource that explains these things in-depth in lieu of a typed-out response*)

    Thanks!

I saved the chat log. You and I both know that it wasn't a bad idea.

    * Looking up deck-thinning on the YGC wiki, I'm guessing it can be split into card draw and tutors (MTG's term for cards that let you look for a specific card in your deck). They're considered useful, especially in the competitive scene, but it definitely depends on what kind of deck you're using. Card draw's most important for Blue decks, since they want to have answers to anything the enemy throws at them, and Tutors are pretty common in every colour except Red.

    * There are, but I'm not the one you should be asking about that. Haven't considered mana curves in a while.

    * The more abilities a card has, the more expensive it is as compared to a vanilla card of the same size. How much more expensive depends on the ability in question. One-word abilities like vigilance and haste means a little bit more expensive. If it's an ability that you have to tap or pay mana to activate, it'll be a lot more expensive.
