That was pretty much what my initial lesson was like.

That and me nearly driving into a ditch and the instructor having to use his brake to stop me.

And the instructor repeatedly pointing out 'pretty girls' which just made me feel uncomfortable.

AND WHEN WERE YOU PLANNING ON COMPLETING TODAY'S READING A8?

    time

    why

Something mildly amusing: In Ohio, in addition to the on-road test, you have to do a "maneuverability test" where you're in a parking lot and have to maneuver around 5 traffic cones with posts in them, like so:

    image

So, obviously, if you hit a cone, you fail, right? Wrong! If you knock over a cone or move it from its proper place, you fail. But if you just hit the cone, you're completely allowed to back the car up and try again.

And that's how Centie passed the test!

I don't know why, but I always found Pluggers charming

I always disliked Pluggers, mainly because of nonsense like that.

I mean, it's one thing to be a stubborn old person who insists on doing things in less efficient ways, but when you act smug about it like that, that's when I want to strangle you.

On the list of "things nobody expected to happen", that's pretty high up there.

    ^ Ah.

If i had been born a decade earlier i really can't see me using a mobile phone or the internet now.

i have a feeling i will be insufferable when i am older.

Pluggers is a single-panel newspaper comic comprised of reader-submitted one-liners about being "pluggers". What "pluggers" are is never really defined, but the idea seems to be that they're the sort of working-class "everyman"...which, realistically, tends to mean stubborn white baby-boomers. *shrug*

Personally, I would like to think I'm the kind of person who will embrace technological and social advances instead of balking at them, but maybe that's unrealistic.

After all, I already hate certain changes. The fact that wireless mice are just considered "normal" mice instead of pointless wastes of cash, the trend toward mobile-style interfaces on desktop computers, etc.

Latency in mice is a terrible thing. :|

    ^^^^ & ^^^ i see.

It weirds me out how everything seems to be becoming increasingly abstract and complex.

i can understand a baby-boomer being suspicious.  Things changed a lot in the last half a century.

i would like to be that kind of person, but i am definitely not.

i feel guilty for making such frequent use of technologies that i don't entirely understand.

  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    Ah.

Is the snow deep where you are?

i'm slightly jealous.  All we've had here lately was rain.
  • It's not really deep, just slushy and sinks into your shoes.

Not helped by the fact that the shoes I'm wearing are old and have holes in them

  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    Well that's unfun.

We haven't had any fun or interesting weather here in a long time.

Either we get rain, or we get just enough snow to make driving a pain.

I keep hoping that just once this winter we'll actually get enough snow to close the schools and such. I want a break from the monotony.

Hopefully I can catch him between when he gets home from dropping off my brother and when he leaves for work...

  • I don't drink just because I don't particularly like beer. *shrug*

yeah but beer is like the least tasty of the alcohols

im sorry that opinion is incorrect, i was like you once, then i just realised that wine was always tasty and it was me that was not tasty

Your throat will be grateful for Formamint; after the old-time unpleasant methods
  • across the whole spectrum of lager, real ale, microbrewery shit, dodgy homebrewed beer, etc. etc. there have been about 2 or 3 beers i have legitimately liked

It was, yeah. Even if I didn't go out this morning (which I want to do), I'll have to drive the car later to go pick up my brother from school.

We got it taken care of now, though.

  • Fun Fact: Apparently, the rule allowing the Pope to resign has only been on the books for about 800-900 years.

The pope who instated it resigned shortly after.

The last pope to resign was Nixon, I believe

    I'm home now.

I went out to Whitehall (anyone who asks which state will be slapped) and took some photos, mainly of that fire station traffic signal I was ranting about a few weeks back, but other stuff too.

Debating whether or not to try and get in a nap before brother-retrieving time.

    THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS

This strip right here is the essence of Pluggers:

"We're gonna do things the old-fashioned way! Sure, it adds several minutes to my commute, and it ultimately costs me more money since I waste gas idling, but I'll do it anyway, because...yeah!"
Man, if someone did that around here (where the gates will also happily take coins if you don't have an EZPass, at least on the Dulles Toll Road), they'd probably get rammed. :P Besides, about the only time you'd ever need a receipt for a toll is if you're expensing it.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
And now I'm reading some of the other strips. I remember when the previous generation of old farts were making these sorts of jokes on BBSes back in the 1990s. :P
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
Pluggers is the most annoying shit. *spits*
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
The art is competent and the characters are kind of cute, but the jokes are corny as Mom's cornbread. Holy damn.
  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
Sometimes it's weird to me that there are parts of the country where people use toll roads as part of their daily commute.

Ohio has only one toll road (the Ohio Turnpike) and most of it is rural...it's more the kind of highway you'd use to travel through the state than to travel within the state. (That's what US 30 is for!)
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
Yeah, it's more common in urban areas (especially in the Northeast) than it is further West. Pretty much all of 95 from Baltimore to Boston has a toll on it someplace, and most of the bridges and tunnels between NY and NJ are tolled too.
  • Just woke up to find that my mom has been taken to the hospital via ambulance. We don't know why, but apparently she was well enough to text that fact to my stepdad so I'm hoping it's nothing serious.
  • Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast
Warning, the following post contains Socialised Medicine which may upset some and angry others.

    Spoiler:
the Doctor thinks I either have a water infection or have diabetes
