The arcade division closed, the English language branch closed, some awesome people left, and they aren't making danmakus anymore, so they're kind of still around, but I think they're mostly subsisting on what little they get from smartphone ports. Even their last arcade game, three years ago, quite nearly had to get cancelled. I suppose it's not completely impossible for them to make a comeback.

Interesting point. I always figured it was just sort of a choice on Pynchon's part, since he makes all kinds of weird choices. He does mention Superman by name later on.
