The various imperial/US customary measurements aren't actually arbitrary; they developed largely independently of one another and the units are whatever people found convenient for their purposes. I find the metric system much easier to use, but that's having grown up using it. The transition from imperial to metric units in the UK was confusing and unintuitive to a lot of people, because it meant having to learn an entirely new system from scratch, and one which doesn't closely resemble the system it replaced. The "superiority" of the metric system depends largely on what you're used to, and sometimes on what it is you're trying to measure.
