Frankly, I think TFA was not intended to be a standalone, it's the Act I of a larger trilogy. In Episode VIII, I'm sure that there will be plenty of opportunities for the cast to be explored further, and more opportunities for them to be permitted to fail. That might not be the smartest decision to make as a director, but that's where I think the film is coming from.
I understand where you're coming from, and I don't blame you. I think the others are just a bit put off by the fact that you don't like the thing they like. I like Luke as much as anybody else, and I'm especially happy the rumors of him turning to the dark side proved false, but it's not an insult to say he's pretty vanilla, that's just a fact.
He just happens to be a very good kind of vanilla.

Keep in mind that the extent of Luke's Jedi abilities by the end of the first movie were "mediocre performace deflecting a training drone's shots", and "hears the voice of James McCloud telling him to calm the fuck down before taking a critical shot". Nothing else he did in that movie was Force-related at all. It took Luke quite a bit of hardcore training on Dagobah before he went after Vader (and LOST), and several years before he was particularly proficient.
Rey? Picks up miraculous skill at piloting, which she has no business having any prior experience with, such that she's instantly a match for career pilots and pulls off an impossible setup for Finn. Knows enough about ships she's never seen before to impress Han Fucking Solo, despite her skills being mainly in picking them apart for sale and likely never having seen most of the scavenged parts operational before. Scores her very first blaster shot ever dead center despite having obviously never even held one before. Resists a trained Sith's mental invasion and possibly turns it back on him a bit. Does a mind trick out of fucking nowhere, despite never even being told they exist. BEATS the aforementioned trained Sith (though I'm willing to give her a pass on that given he'd been bleeding out for several minutes beforehand and just fought another protagonist).
I'm sorry, but even though I liked the movie overall, she's a BIT ridiculous. You're not even this powerful early on in Star Wars games.

TBF, I can very easily see that bit of bullshit pass into legend without anyone questioning it, and the fact that Rey believes it could be seen as a bit of confirmation that the movie doesn't believe in her piloting abilities as much as some people seem to think it does.

I guess I did overreact there, and I'm sorry for that. You're right that Naney wasn't judging me. I just felt like I'd state my preference.
