oh i (think?) he's fine with anime, he just went off on PROFOUDNLY tenuous as hell thread that explained that loli/shota porn was deliberately disseminated on 4chan in the early to mid 2000s to convince young people with as yet unformed sexualities that they were in fact pedophiles so that they would feel like the social justice warriors would be after them so they would be more susceptible to the diabolical seduction of the far right
This sounds like the sort of out-there theory I would come up with when I've been sleep-deprived for a few days. (And if he'd done the research, he'd know that those two have been An Issue in the anime world for years, even before 4chan, and that loneliness and alienation in general is like catnip to far-right recruiters and there were and are a lot of angsty teenagers on 4chan.)
Yes, I can scour the world of Jem and the Holograms for exceptions but why would I? I know they exist, they land on my door step sometimes, but life is too short to swim upstream for Jem and the Holograms. There's Jem and the Holograms everywhere.

Oh wow Laci Green is in an MRA power couple with Chris Ray Gun.
Lindsay Ellis has gotta be scrambling to get brunch reservations locked down for the next nerd convention
Uh oh Dan Olson came in with his degree in armchair psychology to tell us this is all because Laci Green is an ex-Mormon
God her whole squad is a buncha middlebrow craven loser pseuds
Y'know, you actually posted what he said elsewhere, and it was remarkably insensitive and snotty and even bigoted, for sure, but then you said you wouldn't bother calling him out on it because you think he'd ignore you or his sycophants would get mad, and... why the fuck not do it anyway? You come over here and whine about how some person who makes Youtube videos was throwing shade at you on Twitter and her fans on SA are dicks and you make it into a fucking months-long drama about your abject humiliation, and yet you refuse to actually stand your ground on *any* of this shit. You just bash us over the head for not being supportive enough for not constantly telling you how right you are about everything and how all your decisions in this matter have been sound ones, and I am sick of it. I am your friend, not your toady. Grow a damned spine and fight back for once.
I'm not asking you to start a turf war with some guy who talks about film theory on the Internet. I'm just asking you to call somebody who you frequent the same forum as on an ignorant and ill-considered comment, preferably in a polite but firm fashion. He can't *do* anything to you even if he won't listen, and from what little I've gleaned about him as a person, I think he'll at least try to respond coherently even if you don't immediately make him reassess his self-evidently problematic position.
Hell, I'd ask him why he and Kyle still give RLM the time of day after their Gator apologia, too. Being personally friendly with people with crappy ideas is one thing, but not addressing them critically when they're presented in an opinion-piece format is entirely different, and while I sincerely enjoy their work, it's really kind of baffling to me. And you're in a position to ask these questions! Not as "some rando pedant," which you might think they think of you as, but just some person who likes analysis videos and has a platform to get a straight answer out of someone whose work you, at least at some point, had respect for.
Goons are fucking stupid, so I get where you're coming from, and I'll admit I'd probably get myself banned from SA for being ornery about shit like that. That said, I think you should call him on the Laci Green thing at the very least. Dan strikes me as someone genuinely concerned about how people treat marginalised groups, and I should hope that pointing out that he is othering a historically persecuted religious minority based on literalist standards which would logically condemn any major Abrahamic faith would make him reconsider his framing, at the very least.
(And yeah, it's not like Mormons are in dire financial straits, but that's a bit like saying Jews don't deserve sympathy because... yeah, it's pretty obvious. Current privilege does not erase prejudice or make unfair double standards any less unfair. There are plenty of Mormons who are not fundamentalist loonies. Feel free to note, by the by, that a genderqueer Jewish friend of yours said this about his post.)
i don't think that comparison is really fair because mormons have much more centralized organization and bla bla bla what i actually want to say is that saying "says my black friend" isn't a great look
Yeah, point taken about the unintentional tokenism thing. I just take unthinking prejudice fairly seriously for good reason.
It is probably worth noting that Al is himself not within the conventional gender binary for a number of reasons, and that his family has been pretty supportive all things considered. The assumption that people can't adapt when given new information, particularly as regards loved ones, is such an insult to others' generosity of spirit.
as far as i understand mormon theology it is indeed pretty serious about gender binarism. they're probably not going to disown anybody because family is just as critical (or at least so i thought before they voted in a guy who defined "grandparent" as non-family, but whatever). i just think it's kind of a stretch to infer from a church doctrine to a rank and file member - EX-member - 's feelings
I mean, again, individual members are not by default rigorous adherents to literal interpretations of church theology. Not every Mormon literally believes that Native Americans are secret Levites or that Masonic symbols in clothing can stop bullets, let alone every former member-turned-TERF.
It's just such a dumb way to put it, at the very least, like being religious requires you to be a bigot.
Like dude, she's literally a sex educator and left the church because she was bisexual and disagreed with the church's views on women.
Gah, this is othering. This assumption that people are just complete prisoners to their culture unless they have personal reasons to reject aspects of it is absurd.

Did you say that? Because pointing these things out when people are jerks is important.

I've heard of a trial by fire, but this is just silly.

Because you actually hold people to standards.
