been thinking about Paper Mario: TTYD and wound up reading about Vivian

Anonus already pointed out to me that Vivian was trans in the Japanese version, but i don't think i registered before that this wasn't like with Birdo, it sounds like the script was very clearly written with trans identities in mind

i feel the . . . ciswashing, for want of a better term, of Vivian in the English translation is more depressing because the localization is otherwise very witty and amusing

if it had been a bad localization all round it would still be a bad thing, of course, but it wouldn't feel like some malicious thing hidden in something i otherwise thoroughly enjoyed
  • NoA has a very conservative idea of what 'family friendly' is unfortunately.

I am struggling to imagine how the domestic version would've been any better, given Japan's general attitude towards transpeople, but I suppose I'll never know.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
She was referred to as male a few times in the Japanese version, despite herself identifying as female, so that's not good.

But her identity was accepted by her sisters at the end, and she's not a negatively portrayed character.  It could have been a lot worse.
  • Man its kinda lame that Specialist Traynor in Mass Effect 3 is revealed to be a lesbian in the most stilted way possible

Like she doesn't have to drop a line about finding EDI's voice attractive (what? She's a robot. She has a robot voice.) she can just outright SAY "yeah I'm a lesbian"

What's especially weird is that that's pretty much what they did with the bisexual characters and Cortez

And she's a really good character aside from that

Let's discuss the trans character in Nier.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i don't know Nier besides what you've posted about it

    but please do go on

I don't necessarily subscribe to this logic. because some mods add monsters / events / items.

The basic tenant is that yes, adding 173 mods to minecraft usually will result in something that grabs at the imagination more than vanilla minecraft.
true, but most of the mods in question simply add tools to supplement the original purpose of minecraft, which is to build cool things, and I lack the capacity to build cool things

Spoiler: Nier doesn't have a trans character.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
I don't mind running Minecraft with a zillion mods (my niece insists on doing that), but I do mind all the rigamarole you have to go through to get some of them. Quite a few of them are behind links with Undertone-like full screen ads, and those ads have viruses in them half the time.

I installed uBlock Origin to get around that, but not before a critter ended up on Mom's machine because of it. >.<

I just used a modpack, meaning that all of the dirty work is done for me

I have seen video of it, but never played it. Seems like it gets a little complex.

slowbeef has a remarkable ability to examine literally everything in the room, twice, except the thing he needs to.

Like, say there's a cylindrical object, and the target pops up on one side of it within line of sight of him.  He'll miss it in his peripheral vision, circle around in the opposite direction until it's in his peripheral vision on the other side, stop right before he registers it, circle all the way back, then before he sees it again from the first side, turn around and start checking the outer walls.  This is, like, worse than random guessing.  He has to be doing this on purpose.

He also tends to not be able to recognize large, aggressively-glowing weak points.  Like, all those modern design conventions that make stuff you need to look at obnoxiously bright, with a completely different color scheme, and usually pulsating some kind of sparkling particle effect or crepuscular rays?  He's why this exists.  And it's apparently not enough.

The "translation" of Sakamoto's easter egg recording cracked me up pretty hard though.

Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
If anyone has any money, maybe support Indivisible?

505 Games is matching the contributions, but only if the campaign reaches its goal.

The last boss in Indivisible’s demo is Really Fucking Hard.

It’s sort of turn-based, but the turns go so quickly that it becomes a brawler.

But everything looks good, sounds good, feels good, so I'd say that hundred dollars I put down on it is money well spent.

I got my first King Crazy on ‘Pursuing My True Self (Shinichi Osawa Remix)’.

So, a certain somebody is returning in SMT IV: Final.

  • i gave in and started playing Grim Dawn even though i told myself i'd wait until it got finished but i dont regret this decision at all, the game owns

I can't wait to slap the Demiurge silly in a game that I won't play for at least three years after release.
  • someone right now is formulating a post on how that is brilliant satire
  • like all the stuff in grim dawn that isnt finished yet is at the end of the game so if i just fuck around a lot and constantly get side tracked trying to make new characters (ie how i always play games like this) itll probably take me at least until release if not longer to actually get to the last act lol
  • Clicker games are stupid.

I know this because I've played two.  Including the world's first MMO clicker game.
  • "a dark room" owns, though.

Eh, they fill a niche. I don't see any reason to be bothered by 'em
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
    cow clicker
  • Clicker Games are neat.

A Dark Room might be the first entry into the genre that's legitimately brilliant though.
  • Slowbeef apparently can't hold the L button while wiggling the nunchuk.  He keeps bitching about how finicky the grapple lasso is, but never seems to realize that he keeps letting go of his lock right after initiating it.
  • hitting dudes in the face is cool, but the problem is that you have to get close enough for them to hit you back
  • what if you have longer arms

    or a stick
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
or you hit them in the face with a laser.
  • Metroid Prime minimalist hypermode run: 10/12 artifacts, and I'm back at the power bomb room.

Two deaths to random shit while collecting artifacts, and five to the fucking elite pirate in the tiny-ass cramped tunnel right before the power bomb room and the save point.  Fuck that thing.  It's basically pure luck of whether he decides to keep his shield on and walk all the way toward you, because the tunnel is too small to strafe around him without getting punched for almost half your health, and if you get backed into the tunnels you can't jump his shockwaves or get out past him.  And of course he locks the goddamned doors.

Next up is the metroid quarantine run.  Omega Pirate may or may not take several days of attempts -- depends on how lucky I get with power bombs.

    Total deaths: 30
    Accidental upgrade restarts: 3

You guys should play King of Dragon Pass now that it's on Steam.

Also Fran Bow is a game Central Avenue should play.

    Agreed on both.
  • question for anyone who's completed Undertale. Major spoilers below:

    Spoiler:
I completed my first run (neutral, as it has to be). Spared Flowey, and ended up doing the True Lab quest. Currently, I'm back in the ending area, but the elevator back to the hotel area is covered in vines. What do?

I beat the first couple of songs on Hard, and then I unlocked the Dancing All Night difficulty.

I tried it. Six stars harder than the last song I beat. A jump from 10 to 16.

I cleared it. It wasn’t pretty, but I cleared it.

I feel pretty good about myself.
  • Okay, the commentary on the Omega Ridley fight totally makes up for all frustration at Slowbeef over the entire last three games.  XD

Brigador entered early access. It's a nicely put together isometric shooter with a lot of care put into making sure the "isometric" part doesn't get in the way of things. Has stealth elements, including avoiding excessive aggro in-game. I love the aesthetic but I hate the music. (friggin 80s fetishists)

If you want my opinion (having watched it instead of playing it), I say wait for the final game, but if you like isometric shooters definitely get it when it comes out. It plays quite well but aside from having semi-permadeath the currently-available version doesn't provide any serious reason for extended play. I mean, unless you really like trying out a bunch of different vehicles and loadouts.

I'll have to play it with KMFDM as replacement music.
