That sounds like a Mammon thing...

Though, he's kinda the king of all things not good and money related.

Shax's got a Robbin Hood thing going on, but I don't think this situation counts...

    Marquis Shax

Shax[4] (also spelled Chax, Shan, Shass, Shaz, and Scox) is a Great Marquis of Hell, and has power over 30 legions of demons on evil horses. He takes away the sight, hearing and understanding of any person under the conjurer's request, and steals money out of kings' houses, carrying it back to the people. He also steals horses and everything the conjurer asks. Shax can also discover hidden things if they are not kept by evil spirits, and sometimes gives good familiars, but sometimes those familiars deceive the conjurer. He should not be bothered too often.

Shax is thought to be faithful and obedient, but is a great liar and will deceive the conjurer unless obliged to enter a magic triangle drawn on the floor. He will then speak marvellously and tell the truth. He knows when lies are told and uses these to teach lessons.

He is depicted as a stork that speaks with a hoarse but subtle voice; his voice changes into a beautiful one once he entered the magic triangle.

  • Marquis Shax? That's pronounced "Mar-kee Shaks" right?

    And he's a bird?

This sounds like some kind of bizarre fairytale character, honestly.

See, this is why I was not born during medieval or ancient times.

Because I would've totally tried to summon these things. Invisibility? Hellz yea.

Well, pretty much all these books are available now and translated into English and what have you.

And pretty much all this stuff involve invoking the Lord's name, or an angel and making a demon do stuff for you and hoping you didn't get your face clawed off.

The Faustian bargain stuff wasn't a thing until...well... Faust or rather the changes in opinion that eventually resulted in Faust and summoning demons in the name of  God for fun and profit fell out of favor.
  • It almost seems like a science, really, the way it's described here.

It was just sort of taken for a fact that you could do this if you followed the steps properly and knew the right prayers.

A lot of these demonic figures are rather... colorful. A handful are diplomats to European countries.

Yeah pretty much. The Keys of Solomon are very formulaic, and describe all the symbols, things to say in Hebrew, etc... to summon the infernal to do get riches, love, what have you.

Kabbalism is full of this stuff and also details what *snicker* medallions to get with various inscriptions to prevent what demon from doing what.

This did eventually make its way to Christianity which also has collections of works about demons, the strange ways to conjure them, and the oddly specific things you can get them to do.

    Interesting history lesson.

Though, I don't really approve the author using this as an excuse to have people reflect on Isreal as a nation state, the conflict mentioned in the article doesn't offer a lot of parallels to what's going on currently.

Not that the conflict doesn't warrant attention, just that that the conclusion of the article made me question how accurate the rest of it was since the author seemed to have an agenda beyond educating people.

Discovered Manichaeism off a errant mention on a hing Odradek linked.

Really fascinating history lesson here. Basically, it was a sort of Gnostic offshoot of Christianity that eventully got so big it was one of the major world religions. It eventully died out, but was around for over 1,000 years. St. Augustine of Hippo was even an adherent before converting to Christianity.

Well, it spread really far, but doesn't seem to have become dominant in any country. It does look to have been Christianity's main rival to replace paganism at the end, at least.

I find it amusing that Mani was supposed to be the reincarnation of Krishna, Buddha, and Jesus, a line that popped up again in modern Hinduism.

So, Manichaeism eventully become something of an awesome cross-over Religion between Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Hindu, and Buddhism with it's own creation myth.

    “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Yeah, I've found Manichaeism pretty fascinating for a while now. It's basically the most "accessible" of the early Gnostic sects, and arguably served as a dry run for the foundation of Islam several centuries later. It was also apparently very big in Central and East Asia, with more adherents than Nestorian Christianity in some places. Really, had it not been for the Zoroastrian priesthood's crackdown and the popularity of Islam, Mani's teachings very well could have remained a major part of the world religious landscape to this day.

The clout exhibited by the Cathar and Bogomil sects among the mediaeval peasantry are a great argument for this. While they pared down the mythology and made the more extreme ascetic elements optional, the heart of those movements was quintessentially Neo-Manichaean: Dualism, personal revelation, mysticism, ecstatic ritual, a rejection of the flesh and temporal authority, a pragmatic/inclusive approach to ascetic and celibate living—it's all there.

Hence, the abundance of such themes in my writing, in addition to the obvious alternate history stuff...

There are Werewolves and then there are Werewolves with plane sized pet bats who use them to enter houses like Santa Clause, except the only present they bring is turning people into Werewolves...who presumably get their own giant bats.

    ...

    Santa Claus sucks.

Found another link that mentions the bats, but no further details about size other than "giant":

Apparently the making more Werewolves is part of a nefarious scheme to throw awesome Werewolf dances.

^ No. WoW. Where, if I'm correct, you could have a Wolf character and dress him up in typical World of Warcraft style.

    Lucky post!

    Eight

The word for "eight" (八 Pinyin: bā) sounds similar to the word which means "prosper" or "wealth" (發 – short for "發財", Pinyin: fā). In regional dialects the words for "eight" and "fortune" are also similar, e.g. Cantonese "baat3" and "faat3".

There is also a visual resemblance between two digits, "88", and 囍, the "shuāng xĭ" ("double joy"), a popular decorative design composed of two stylized characters 喜 ("xĭ" meaning "joy" or "happiness").

The number 8 is viewed as such an auspicious number that even being assigned a number with several eights is considered very lucky.

    • A telephone number with all digits being eights was sold for USD$270,723 in Chengdu, China.
    • The opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics in Beijing began on 8/8/08 at 8 seconds and 8 minutes past 8 pm local time (UTC+08).[2]
    • A man in Hangzhou offered to sell his license plate reading A88888 for RMB 1.12 million (roughly USD164,000).[2]
    • The Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia each have 88 Floors.
    • The minivan that GM makes for the Chinese market is called the Buick GL8, but the minivans it sold in other countries didn't have that name.
    • The Air Canada route from Shanghai to Toronto is Flight AC88.
    • The KLM route from Hong Kong to Amsterdam is Flight KL888.
    • The United Airlines route from Beijing to San Francisco is Flight UA888, and the route from Beijing to Newark is Flight UA88.
    • The Air Astana route from Beijing to Almaty is Flight KC888.
    • One of Cathay Pacific's flight numbers from Hong Kong to Vancouver and New York is CX888.
    • Singapore Airlines reserves flight numbers beginning with the number 8 to routes in China and Korea.
    • In Singapore, a breeder of rare Dragon fish (Asian Arowana) (which are "lucky fish" and being a rare species, are required to be microchipped), makes sure to use numbers with plenty of eights in their microchip tag numbers, and appears to reserve particular numbers especially rich in eights and sixes (e.g. 702088880006688) for particularly valuable specimens.[3][4]
    • As part of grand opening promotions, a Commerce Bank branch in New York's Chinatown raffled off safety deposit box No. 888.
    • An "auspicious" numbering system was adopted by the developers of 39 Conduit Road Hong Kong, where the top floor was "88" – Chinese for double fortune. It is already common in Hong Kong for ~4th floors not to exist; there is no requirement by the Buildings Department for numbering other than that it being "made in a logical order." A total of 43 intermediate floor numbers are omitted from 39 Conduit Road: those missing include 14, 24, 34, 54, 64, all floors between 40 and 49; the floor number which follows 68 is 88.
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
    Vriska would be so pleased.

Anyway, yeah eight. The Eight Immortals, their Eight Lucky Symbols, the Eight Trigrams...

From The Encyclopedia of Angels by Richard Webster (yeah, there's more than one):

Puriel (Puruel or Pusiel): Puriel is an Angel of punished. He examines every soul that enters Heaven to ensure they meet his his standards. He is said to be ruthless in dealing with the wicked.

Teenagers tend to be under-informed in many subjects, it just comes with the territory of finally being able to partially comprehend a number of heady subjects, but not really figuring out that one's knowledge is very limited in the grand scheme of things.

For my experiences, those that do tend to make a bigger deal of their superior understandings of the working of the universe do happen to skew a on the younger side.

    So much this.

That said, teenagers have a lot of crap to deal with, and undergoing a drastic change in worldview can be fairly traumatic.  You have the recipe there for potentially a very cynical mindset.  Some compassion is in order, i think.

That, and stupidity isn't really the exclusive preserve of any age group.  There are douchebaggy adult atheists.
