Currently FFVI is hitting at this odd place where it feels like the story should be guiding me, but instead I'm being left to my own devices. Whatever, I'll use a guide- but then I feel like I'm missing rather important chunks of gameplay by skipping the exploration.
I mean, for context I just quit after failing that damn ass fight against Vargas (the blitz commands aren't registering) for the second time. I don't by any means dislike the game; but I'm catching wind of general gameplay grievances that I don't think are going anywhere anytime soon.
The Blitz commands are kinda annoying and depend on configuring your emulator correctly. Also I think you don't press A again at the end? Not sure I remember clearly though.
Might even have to define diagonals to make them work right.
Are you sure you're entering Blitzes correctly? You're supposed to select the Blitz command, then enter the combination, then select Sabin. (It's kinda dumb.)
As for EO1, that's by far the hardest and most dated game in the series. If you go for any of the DS games, go for 3.

Also EO1's second level introduces you to the memetic F.O.E., specifically the fabled "Ragelope", whose name is informally misspelled by some players so as to indicate that it tends to do nasty and mean things.

Left, right, left, a, correct? I might be fumbling the controls, and maybe I need to prompt the tutorial, but I don't think so on the latter count
Simply because having farmers in your actual party is a terrible terrible idea. :P (We will ignore that time I soloed the game with one because that was dumb.)
They're used for gathering materials, which you'll need to unlock shop items. It's so you don't need to waste points on gathering skills on your actual characters.
There are gathering spots in the main dungeon. The idea is you throw a few points into Combat Study on your Farmers, go exploring with your A Team, and if you need mats, go in with your (literal) farming party who have been leveling up whilst you're in there.
Once you actually have a party, choose Custom from the start menu, Skill, and you assign points from there. You start with 3 points, and gain 1 every time you level up.
combat is too different for people, and the "linearity" I keep hearing about. Not enough chances to screw off. They wanted to keep you on a rail so you can stare at Lightning's ass for a couple more minutes.
Lightning was probably the main selling point of FFXIII.
to be fair, people have been complaining about linearity in JRPGs for years now and we've gone through both a decline and supposed death of JRPGs and then a resurgence of JRPGs
It's not just the linearity. It's combined with the game's overt focus on combat, even early on when the game has no actual combat mechanics in place. You go for like three hours without a hint of paradigms or crystariums, just auto attacking your way through things constantly.
Plus the move away from prerendered backgrounds towards dynamic camera control kills the mise en scène that previous games had. The point a to point b running is emotional dead space. And with the constant scene breaks it feels especially pointless.
I can recommend NES 3, SNES 4 (a.k.a. 2), SNES 5 with RPGe fan-translation, SNES 6 (a.k.a. 3), and maybe GBA TA.
I have played some of the others, but I'm not sure I'd readily recommend NES 1 or 2, GB Legend, SNES Mystic Quest, PC 7, PS1 7, or DS 4HL. And I haven't played enough of PS1 Tactics or GB Adventure.
I put system names before them because some of them have multiple versions, and then after I did it for some I decided to do it for all.

A lot of people have trouble with that. It was a mistake to put the Blitz tutorial on a timed fight.
Also here's a skill simulator so you can plan stuff out.
It's piss fuck awful but I'm having a blast
Has anyone done a thorough breakdown on why either its combat or its writing fundamentally doesn't work?
