i was rly slow to realize this but in gundams the world isn't operating based on a nation state concept. things like gjallahorn being everywhere and the apparent total lack of police on mars confused me because they don't fit in a sovereignty concept - a concept of international law in general - that i'm used to. i parsed 'economic bloc' as 'state' and that's wrong, they're not really states in a sense i would use.
really i can now view most of the high level plot as going from this 'reconstruction' system back to a system with states. that's martian independence, that's arbrau getting an army. then tekkadan isn't just fighting some foreign colonial power like i kind of thought about it, but the only legal power, anywhere.
i probably could have figured this out a season ago, but, slow
That's fair. Some are more on the Hot Blooded end of things I think.
There's also Turn-A-Gundam which I want to watch but apparently you need like a pretty good running knowledge of the, well, entire rest of the franchise to get the most out of it. It's also long.
i'm halfway through it and i don't think that's true. i mean the only other gundam i've seen is the new one, which obviously turn a isn't related to. there's refarances like Char but it doesn't matter, it's a great show on its own.
well, maybe it's true that it's way better if you've seen other gundams, but i wouldn't know. i can say confidently that it's very good even if you haven't.
both (IBO, the new one, and turn A) have tons of political nonsense too... the guy from last season who was (a) the enemy (b) a real dickhead about it is now almost likeable and it's fucking me up
the whitewashing was bad. renaming the character was confusing. but this... this. i don't even know what to say about this

I kinda want to comment but I haven't seen the original and besides I'd probably end up getting myself into trouble by failing to read something like whitewashing.
oh well
For some reason it does give me Matrix vibes. Despite the fact that I also haven't seen The Matrix.
the actual film doesn't seem... wholly terrible... though the fact all the trailers seem to give away a major twist is kind of weird
Probably a twist that isn't known to audiences not familiar with the original, since all I can tell is: (1) cyberpunk future, probably dystopia (2) main character is involved in actiony stuff and fighting, and seems to require stealth and also some amount of running around.
From my prior knowledge I think I recognize the guy with the weird eyes. (sidenote: even pancake brain crystal elderly) Though I thought he was a good guy? Not sure. He seems to be shown as a bad guy here.
It's less clear from that abbreviated trailer, but some dialogue is someone telling the Major (the main character) that she was reconstructed as a soldier after an accident, and then other dialogue is someone else saying that the previous voice lied about her provenance, more or less. it's true it might be more obvious to someone already familiar, since the major's backstory is mostly blank and she often wonders about the possibility of having a constructed identity.
It's a pretty classic way of indicating a mouth contorted with frustration, which is a nuance of anger which seems lacking in much traditional American animation for some reason. Grimaces, frowns and sneers are favoured here, whereas the Japanese seem to emphasise holding back anger in their visual language: The twisted and flattened mouth, the bulging vein. I assume it's cultural.

where's that tumblr post that overlays that with the text post where the person is like "I had a crush on someone in 1st grade but didn't know what a crush was so I just wrote her a letter that said 'get out of my school'"
Finally decided on a way to make use of the ten-point rating system that MAL has.
In short, I adapted my five-point rating system: +2 => 9 = loved it +1 => 7 = liked it 0 => 5 = meh -1 => 3 = disliked it (i.e. "it did some things that annoyed me") -2 => 1 = hated it (i.e. "it did many things that annoyed me")
Added/changed/removed various ratings in my Completed and Dropped lists. For Dropped I added ratings only when I really feel I have an opinion of the show -- as opposed to simply 5'ing due to lack of opinion, which I usually left blank instead.
Curiously, though I was already aware of this, my dropped list contains a few shows that I do like, indicating that I'm not dropping them due to disliking the show.
Anyone have any thoughts on Nanatsu no Taizai? I've always seen it highly rated by MAL (as in on the front page for action shows with a score of 8.39), and yes MAL is just one corner and not exactly the best with filtering out dreck, but I've not just seen it praised on MAL. It being directed by the man who did the storyboarding for Cowboy Bebop and did heavy work on Wolf's Rain and Darker Than Black, alongside several other staff members of note from other shows gives me reason to trust it's not awful. But some nebulous sentiment I can't quite articulate that maybe is just my personal aesthetic biases, makes me second-guess even putting it on my extensive plan to watch list in the first place.

(I get that you're talking about my -monogatari analysis but I wrote that something like a week ago...)

I gotta admit that I puked a bit in my mouth
also is it bad that this trailer vaguely makes me want to watch the show/movie a little more than i previously did
