I would have thought the reaction to the change would have been warmer given that it's literally a blog about rebrands, but the readership did the kneejerk negative reaction thing they're so quick to chide the general public for. (I think I need to stop reading the comments, honestly. Place is full of goddamn hipsters.)
I like it, myself. Reminds me of a fake magazine cover I did a few years ago with a similar font for the main headline.
Also, that NGK logo looks like something that would have been on a particularly beige computer from the mid-late 1980s, something Epson or Samsung would have made.

Presumably because the products/services they're selling are vastly different enough that one couldn't reasonably worry that consumers would get confused. Nobody's gonna think "I love these AccuWeather condoms!"
It's not unique in that regard. It's like how "Dove" is used for both a brand of soap and a brand of chocolate, with both trademarks owned by different companies.

I actually thought it was the same company, which is one reason I've never bought Dove chocolate. Don't they use the same logotype?

That seems to be a common misconception.
Dove chocolate is owned by Mars, Dove toiletries is owned by Unilever.
This is... a weird one, honestly, with no small reason behind that being that Ubi and the old mark are both pretty close to my heart thanks to Rayman. I think I like the refreshed swirl (though I do think it lost some of the flair from the original version, particularly the old "U" shape they put into the center), but I'm not fully convinced on the text yet; the new geometric sans isn't distinctive the way the old type was, even with the new "O" shape giving a nod to the swirl.
I'm wondering what will become of the Uplay logo going forward, as well as how the main logo animates (like EA, a lot of the appeal of the previous swirl was how they adapted it to individual games; the company says that won't change, so...). I think I'll grow to like it with time, though it'll take some getting used to for sure.

Soap Dove belongs to Unilever, while Chocolate Dove is owned by Mars.
Trash Dove belongs to the internet, though.
