Also, honestly, I just think the original trilogy (at least the first two movies and pieces of ROTJ) are just really, really good at what they do
  • that's it im kinkshaming

Actually, I think that would be more accurate to say for Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces.

(I really need to read that book sometime...)

Frankly, I think TFA was not intended to be a standalone, it's the Act I of a larger trilogy. In Episode VIII, I'm sure that there will be plenty of opportunities for the cast to be explored further, and more opportunities for them to be permitted to fail. That might not be the smartest decision to make as a director, but that's where I think the film is coming from.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
Well like The Hero with a Thousand Faces is a theoretical book, not a work of fiction in itself

Star Wars used THwaTF as a model, but that model comes straight from old mythic texts like the Iliad
  • did anyone like, read what I said?

im not saying that it's old, or that it's not well done, it's that I am not liking what I am being served.

It's like being served the world's most amazing lutefisk. it's still lutefisk.

If you wanan chow down on said metaphorical lutefisk, go right ahead, but I reserve my right to be slightly put off by the whole affair.

I understand where you're coming from, and I don't blame you. I think the others are just a bit put off by the fact that you don't like the thing they like. I like Luke as much as anybody else, and I'm especially happy the rumors of him turning to the dark side proved false, but it's not an insult to say he's pretty vanilla, that's just a fact.

He just happens to be a very good kind of vanilla.
  • Munch munch, chomp chomp...
Just want to say, I think you've very neatly said exactly how I feel about it all, from my experience with Star Wars. Which is cool, so thank.

What if you're the type who doesn't particularly like most fancy foods, and generally prefers well-done comfort food?

You are fine to feel differently, and to prefer to dine at gourmet restaurants, but you should realize that is just the preference that you have.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i think naney was pretty clear about that?
  • Splat Charger Specialist
Section, naney's not insulting those of us who like Luke or the franchise. There's not really much further to discuss here by using further persuasive metaphors.

Nany doesn't think any less of us, and I certainly hope none of us think any less of him.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    i'm like, ok

it DOES irk me a bit when someone's criticisms of a thing can be boiled down to "this would be better if we changed [all the bits that made it so appealing to me]"

but naney's made it quite clear here that Star Wars just isn't his thing

what's wrong with someone not liking something you liked?  is it hurting your enjoyment at all?

    Agreed

I know I don't think any less of him.

I can honestly understand most of his complaints.

I guess I did overreact there, and I'm sorry for that. You're right that Naney wasn't judging me. I just felt like I'd state my preference.

Keep in mind that the extent of Luke's Jedi abilities by the end of the first movie were "mediocre performace deflecting a training drone's shots", and "hears the voice of James McCloud telling him to calm the fuck down before taking a critical shot".  Nothing else he did in that movie was Force-related at all.  It took Luke quite a bit of hardcore training on Dagobah before he went after Vader (and LOST), and several years before he was particularly proficient.

Rey?  Picks up miraculous skill at piloting, which she has no business having any prior experience with, such that she's instantly a match for career pilots and pulls off an impossible setup for Finn.  Knows enough about ships she's never seen before to impress Han Fucking Solo, despite her skills being mainly in picking them apart for sale and likely never having seen most of the scavenged parts operational before.  Scores her very first blaster shot ever dead center despite having obviously never even held one before.  Resists a trained Sith's mental invasion and possibly turns it back on him a bit.  Does a mind trick out of fucking nowhere, despite never even being told they exist.  BEATS the aforementioned trained Sith (though I'm willing to give her a pass on that given he'd been bleeding out for several minutes beforehand and just fought another protagonist).

I'm sorry, but even though I liked the movie overall, she's a BIT ridiculous.  You're not even this powerful early on in Star Wars games.

    This is a thing.

Like, where is Rey going at this rate? Will we end up at some Force Unleashed nonsense? Rey is the most absolute munchkin Jedi build possible.

Well, if we go by the merch, the main character of the film was ace Millenium Falcon pilot, Finn.

Also I am going to be very mad if no moons fall on Chewie.
  • but if a moon falls on him life day will be ruined

It's a bit ridiculous, but it doesn't bother me even a little, because the Hero's Journey isn't about gaining more power and skill. It's about growing up, and no amount of power or skill can smooth that path that you walk against yourself.

Besides, we all saw what happened when Luke got cocky. Rey likely will, in her own way, too, and it will be devastating.

The worst part of the new movie: Implying making the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs makes any sense.

Also I saw a review that identified Kylo Ren as being more like a school shooter trying to be Darth Vader, and that makes his character more interesting in a way I hadn't considered.

Kessel is in the middle of a shitload of black holes, so very, very careful navigation is a surprisingly valid concern and bragging right.

    Yeah sure.

That's not an explanation created because someone didn't realize he was bullshitting Obi-Wan

TBF, I can very easily see that bit of bullshit pass into legend without anyone questioning it, and the fact that Rey believes it could be seen as a bit of confirmation that the movie doesn't believe in her piloting abilities as much as some people seem to think it does.

So, he's bragging about how well the Falcon handles, how reliable it is?

So, the Milennium Falcon is the Ford Econoline of Star Wars?

Kylo Ren is a good example of superpowered teenage angst, and how Anakin should have been handled in the prequels, in my opinion.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
I always assumed that the deal with the Falcon is that it performs very well because it has a lot of weird illegal modifications which make it unreliable, and makes it break a lot, but also make it an incredibly  fast and maneuverable ships.
